As a Machine Learning Engineer at Roke, you’ll help build ethical, secure AI solutions that turn complex data into insight for national security teams. You’ll join a supportive, collaborative group of engineers, scientists and analysts, working on projects where your ideas can make a real difference.
Based from Woking or Romsey, you’ll work across AI, machine learning, cyber, cloud and data challenges, with some time on client sites in the London area when projects need it.
What you’ll be doing
- Design, build and deploy machine learning models that solve real-world national security problems.
- Work with multidisciplinary teams to integrate AI into secure, mission-critical systems.
- Prototype new algorithms and approaches, turning research into practical tools.
- Use MLOps practices to make model pipelines scalable, maintainable and secure.
- Apply large language models to agents, retrieval systems and user-facing workflows.
What you’ll bring
We know great candidates may not tick every box. The must-haves are below; the rest can be developed with support from the team.
Must-haves
- Strong Python coding skills.
- Hands-on experience building or deploying machine learning models using tools such as PyTorch, TensorFlow or scikit-learn.
- Good software engineering habits, including Git, testing and CI/CD basics.
- Curiosity about AI/ML research and the judgement to apply it responsibly and securely.
- Experience with containerization for deploying and scaling AI solutions (Docker).
Nice to have
- Experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, RAG, fine-tuning, agents, evaluation using frameworks such as LangChain or LangGraph.
- MLOps experience with tools such as MLflow, DVC or Weights & Biases.
- Practical experience deploying AI solutions on AWS.

Where you’ll work
Choose Woking or Romsey as your base. Woking is close to London customer links and a short walk from the station. Romsey offers a countryside setting near the New Forest, with parking and an on-site gym. A proportion of your time may be spent on client sites in the London area.
Clearance
This role requires you to be eligible and willing to achieve DV clearance. Eligibility criteria are available on the gov.uk website.
