The Role
As an SEN / Behaviour Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers, therapists, and wider support staff to provide tailored support for pupils with complex additional needs. Many pupils may require support with communication, emotional regulation, mobility, sensory needs, and personal care routines.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups throughout the school day
- Assisting with personal care, including toileting, changing, feeding, and hygiene support where required
- Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils to help them feel safe and supported
- Supporting pupils with behavioural, emotional, and communication challenges using positive behaviour management strategies
- Implementing de-escalation techniques in response to dysregulated behaviours
- Supporting the delivery of differentiated and engaging learning activities tailored to EHCP outcomes
- Encouraging independence, social interaction, and life skills development
- Helping maintain a safe, structured, and predictable learning environment
- Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists, parents, and external professionals
Essential Requirements
- Minimum of one year’s experience working within an SEN or specialist provision
- Experience supporting children or young people with complex additional needs
- Previous personal care experience within an educational, care, or support setting
- Confidence supporting pupils with behavioural challenges and emotional dysregulation
- A calm, patient, nurturing, and emotionally resilient approach
- Strong teamwork, communication, and relationship-building skills
- A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people
Desirable Experience
Experience supporting pupils with:
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- ADHD
- SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs)
- PMLD or physical disabilities
- Speech, language, and communication difficulties
- Trauma-informed approaches or Team Teach training
