This is a well-established joint post between Bath University and North Bristol NHS Trust with an equal split between both roles.
The post holder will be responsible for developing, delivering, and assessing practice-based learning at an undergraduate level and be part of the Critical Care pharmacy team providing a clinical service to the speciality.
This is an exciting opportunity for a pharmacist looking for a unique cross sector position. This joint appointment with the University of Bath will involve working collaboratively with other practice educators to design, deliver and assess practice based learning elements of the pharmacy undergraduate degree course including our very successful Clinical Learning in Practice (CLIP) model. The successful individual would be required to cover a range of face to face teaching activities and elements of assessment. There is also a requirement to provide pastoral support to students.
Responsibilities whilst working in the hospital include the pharmaceutical management and care of patients in intensive care and theatre environments, training and education, leadership and financial and governance reporting.
The role has a major focus on teaching and potential candidates must therefore have excellent presentation and communication skills, have completed a clinical diploma, and be able to work both at the University in Bath and Southmead hospital in Bristol.
Work closely with the Intensive Care multidisciplinary team to develop and deliver the clinical pharmacy service in accordance with Trust policies and procedures, national legislation, and standards.
To provide support to the Highly Specialist Critical Care and Theatres Lead Pharmacist with service development, clinical guideline development, audit, training and mentoring.
To provide specialist clinical pharmacy services at a high level to the Critical Care Specialty at NBT by supporting the safe and effective medicines provision for Critical Care patients throughout the whole organisation.
Design and deliver high quality teaching to undergraduate students on the new MPharm programme in line with Department/School and University policy.
Carry out a significant role in the design, development and delivery of practice-based learning in the department of pharmacy and pharmacology.
Contribute effectively to University wide developments and innovation in the design and delivery of teaching.
To act in accordance with Medicines legislation, the code of ethics of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), United Kingdom Medicines Information (UKMI) standards and Trust policies and procedures.
To teach and supervise junior staff such as pharmacists, technicians, students and healthcare professionals.
To line manage band 7 specialist and rotational pharmacists working in the relevant areas.

Practice Educator Role
Deliver high quality teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students which is informed by significant professional expertise gained via practice, research/study and extensive teaching experience. Includes designing units of study and their assessment regimes, identifying learning objectives and teaching methods, developing materials and resources, including materials for use online, communicating subject matter clearly and encouraging debate.
Provide appropriate responses to student interventions during teaching, responding to questions within and outside class times and react pro-actively and positively to changes in course content or delivery. Specific undergraduate teaching in the new MPharm will include: Design and delivery of the experiential hospital visits in MPharm 1; Design and delivery of the Clinical Learning in Practice (CLIP) teaching in MPharm 1-4; Support for Practice Placements throughout the new MPharm
Design, implement and evaluate teaching and learning packages, participate in the development and modernisation of the curriculum, taking a lead in parts of this activity
Design, implement and evaluate assessment tools and criteria for courses, mark assessments, ensuring adequate moderation, providing written or oral feedback as appropriate. Mark final assessments as required
Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate level student projects as required.
Engage pro-actively in on-going professional development both in own subject and in teaching and learning. Act as mentor for more junior teaching fellows or casual teaching staff. May include involvement in professional or teaching and learning networks within and outside the University
Take a lead role in programme evaluation, including facilitating student feedback, reflecting on own teaching design and delivery and implementing ideas for improving own performance
Carry out teaching related management and leadership duties within the Department or Faculty/School undertake another significant activity to contribute to the overall strategic management/direction of the department as allocated by the Director of Practice Based Learning. Take lead on innovations which have impact at the level of the Department or Faculty. May be asked to represent the teaching interests of the Department at Faculty or University level meetings
Take a pastoral role for students when students are away from campus during practice-based learning activities. Maintain a knowledge and awareness of student support services and be able to identify student behaviour which is of concern or where support is needed and refer students on appropriately for assistance as necessary
Carry out teaching-related management duties or other duties within the grade as allocated by the Director of Teaching or Director of Practice Based Learning.
Contribute to outreach and/or Widening Participation activity within the Department, Faculty/School or University
Critical Care Role
Finance, service development, governance
In conjunction with the Critical Care and Theatres Lead pharmacist provide, manage and develop a specialist pharmaceutical service to the intensive care unit within North Bristol NHS Trust
Attend speciality meetings (such as Critical Care governance reviews) and meetings with Speciality and Divisional management teams as required and produce reports on activity as directed, deputising for the lead pharmacist where appropriate
Advise on strategies to ensure cost-effective use of resources and be involved with achieving CIP targets. Provide feedback regarding this to prescribers
Support achieving general pharmacy and appropriate specialist CIP targets
To work closely with the Lead Formulary and Lead High Cost Drugs pharmacists to help progress the Pharmacoeconomics element of the service
On request comment on or provide details for financial reports for the ASCR division
Record and investigate incidents in line with Trust procedures
Record clinical Pharmacy activity in line with departmental procedures
Audit and risk manage selected areas of practice to promote continuous quality improvement as required by the ASCR Division, Pharmacy department or the Trust
Provide pharmaceutical expertise to any multidisciplinary working groups considering protocols, policies and guidelines in the specialist area
Produce protocols, policies and guidelines on designated pharmaceutical practice relating to the critical care service
Ensure that all procedures are adhered to, reviewed regularly and that all necessary records are completed
Deal with high level pharmaceutical queries and provides advice to medical and nursing staff from the critical care areas including senior medical staff
Contribute to the overall development of the clinical pharmacy service through active participation in clinical team meetings. Work closely with all members of the pharmacy department and other healthcare professional
Clinical
Contribute to the provision of highly specialist pharmaceutical service to the critical care areas
Clinically screen prescriptions to ensure the safe, efficient, evidence-based and rational use of medicines in line with the Trust Formulary and departmental policies so that risks to patients are minimised
Deliver specific improvements in the management of patient’s medication to facilitate the patient’s transfer from the intensive care unit and eventual discharge
Challenge inappropriate prescribing and escalate as appropriate
Attend Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) ward rounds to provide pharmaceutical expertise as capacity allows
Manages the pharmaceutical care of an agreed cohort of patients as an independent prescriber as required by the critical care service
Support and promote antimicrobial stewardship
Ensure that an accurate medication history and a full medicines reconciliation (in line with Trust policy) is completed for all patients seen as part of a clinical pharmacy service to allocated inpatient ward(s)
Provide accurate medicines information to other healthcare professionals and patients
Provide support and implement the self-medication policy for patients able to manage their medications in this manner
Deliver effective management of patient's medication to ensure timely and seamless discharge of patients. Communicate effectively with healthcare colleagues in Primary care when necessary, as part of this process
Maintain medicines management systems in conjunction with patients/carers, ward staff and pharmacy staff.
Become familiar with and support the operation and functionality of the Phillips ICCA system on the intensive care unit, supporting the specialist Clinical Information System Pharmacist with reporting, review and validation of changes to the configuration of the system as required to ensure safe and effective prescribing in the critical care setting
Record all major interventions in line with departmental procedures. Investigate and support the recording of adverse drug reactions
Work closely with the clinical site and Trust operational teams to ensure clear communications about daily patient flow issues
Work with the speciality to comply with national and local patient safety drug alerts and initiatives and help with the implementation and recommendation of associated action plans
Undertake any other duties as required by the Director of Pharmacy or their deputy
Education & Training
Contribute to the training of pharmacy undergraduates, medical students, trainee pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and medical and nursing staff as appropriate
Support students undertaking modules or elements related to critical care as part of the Postgraduate Clinical Diploma
Support the training of other pharmacists to competently cover the Critical Care service when needed
Support the development and training of trainee pharmacists as needed
Keep up to date with developments in Pharmacy in order to maintain a high level of professional knowledge and competence
Attend study days and courses as necessary for the development of the service and the individual
Maintain a record of CPD in line with GPhC requirement
Leadership & Management
Represent specialist pharmaceutical interests in MDT meetings within the Trust and in the wider local health economy, sharing knowledge and experience with other critical care pharmacists at a local, regional and national leve
Act as a role model for rotational pharmacists and promote best practice
Responsible for managing band 7 and band 6 pharmacists including appraisals and other HR tasks for example sickness management
Supervise medicines management technicians and/or other dedicated pharmacy staff
Demonstrate strong leadership skills across all elements of role
Other
Provide professional supervision to Patients Services on a sessional basis including being the named Responsible Pharmacist when required
Participate in the pharmacy weekend, bank holiday and late duty service
