Salary: £46,407 per annum
Contract: Permanent, Full Time (37 hours per week, full year)
Location: Multi-campus role (travel required)

About the Role - Assistant Head of Department
We are seeking an experienced and motivated professional to take on the role of Assistant Head of Department within Construction & Building Services, specialising in Multi-Skills and Trowel Trades. This is a key leadership position supporting the Head of Department in driving curriculum excellence, managing staff, and improving student outcomes across a range of study programmes, apprenticeships, and adult learning provision.
You will play a central role in ensuring high standards of teaching, learning and assessment, while supporting the day-to-day operational management of the department across multiple campuses.
Key Responsibilities - Assistant Head of Department
Curriculum & Student Experience
- Support the planning, delivery and continuous improvement of study programmes and courses
- Contribute to timetabling and curriculum organisation with a student-focused approach
- Monitor attendance, progress, behaviour and achievement, taking action where needed
- Embed English and maths across all learning programmes
- Promote outstanding teaching, learning and student outcomes
- Support recruitment, admissions and promotional activities
- Build strong industry links to enhance curriculum relevance and student opportunities
Quality & Improvement
- Lead on quality assurance processes within the subject area
- Use performance data to drive measurable improvements
- Support staff in delivering inclusive, high-quality teaching and assessment
- Promote equality, diversity and inclusive practice across all provision
- Work collaboratively to share best practice and maintain consistent standards
Leadership & Management
- Support line management of lecturers, instructors and technicians
- Conduct performance reviews, 1:1s and contribute to staff appraisals
- Assist with recruitment, induction and development of staff
- Ensure effective use of resources, including rooms and equipment
- Oversee health and safety practices, including risk assessments
Professional Development & Partnerships
- Maintain up-to-date industry knowledge and professional practice
- Develop links with employers and external partners
- Identify and support staff development needs
- Act as a key contact for inclusive practice within the department
About You - Assistant Head of Department
You will be a skilled educator and leader with a strong background in construction and further education. You should have:
- A Level 5 teaching qualification (e.g. Cert Ed, PGCE, DET or equivalent)
- A construction-related qualification relevant to the curriculum area
- An Assessor Award (or equivalent) and ideally working towards or holding an IQA qualification
- Experience teaching in further education and managing or supporting teams
- Strong knowledge of awarding body requirements and quality standards
- Excellent organisational, communication and leadership skills
- Confidence using data to inform decision-making and drive improvement
You will also demonstrate a proactive, flexible and collaborative approach, with a clear commitment to student success, safeguarding, and equality of opportunity.
Additional Information - Assistant Head of Department
- This role involves working across multiple campuses, so the ability to travel independently is essential
- The position is subject to an enhanced DBS check
- Occasional attendance at open days and recruitment events is required
