Overview
The Mental Health and Complex Needs Team Leader plays a critical role in leading the delivery of high-quality support to vulnerable individuals experiencing multiple disadvantages, including mental health, homelessness, and social exclusion.
Based within a four-bedroom residence providing 24/7 support on a flexible rota, the postholder will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day service delivery, supervising staff, and ensuring that individuals transitioning from referral through to discharge receive effective, person-centred support, advice, and access to appropriate accommodation.
The role combines operational leadership with direct support, ensuring the service is safe, responsive, and focused on positive outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Service Leadership and Delivery
· Lead the delivery of a high-quality, person-centred service for single adults (18+) with mental health and/or physical health needs.
· Oversee the referral, assessment, admission, and discharge processes, ensuring timely and effective decision-making.
· Ensure Pathway Assessments are completed to a high standard and inform appropriate support and accommodation pathways.
· Support transitions from mental health inpatient units and other recovery services into stable accommodation.
· Promote a strength-based, recovery-focused approach across the team.
· Maintain a small caseload, providing direct support where required, particularly in complex or high-risk cases.
· Ensure residents receive coordinated access to healthcare, community services, and substance misuse support.
· Oversee support relating to financial inclusion, benefits, and independent living skills.
2. Staff Management and Development
· Provide day-to-day supervision, guidance, and support to staff working within the service.
· Conduct regular supervision sessions, performance reviews, and support staff development.
· Lead team meetings and contribute to a positive, collaborative team culture.
· Ensure staff are trained and competent in areas including safeguarding, risk management, and mental health support.
· Manage staff rotas to ensure consistent 24/7 service coverage.
· Address performance issues in line with organisational policies and procedures.
3. Accommodation and Safeguarding
· Ensure the four-bedroom residence is safe, secure, and fully compliant with all regulatory and health and safety standards.
· Maintain a robust risk management culture, ensuring appropriate safety measures (e.g., anti-ligature fixtures and secured furnishings) are in place.
· Oversee property maintenance, ensuring emergency, urgent, and routine repairs are completed within required timescales.
· Manage and monitor budgets for essential supplies, ensuring resources are used effectively.
· Lead on safeguarding, ensuring all concerns are identified, reported, and managed in line with policy and legislation.
4. Multi-Agency Collaboration and Partnership Working
· Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key partners, including NHS Trusts, Adult Social Care, Housing Services, and the Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.
· Act as a key point of contact for external agencies and stakeholders.
· Promote co-production and integrated working to improve outcomes for residents.
· Ensure effective case management and information sharing in line with GDPR and Data Protection requirements.
· Oversee case tracking systems, using data to monitor performance, outcomes, and service impact.
5. Quality Assurance and Service Improvement
· Monitor service performance, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
· Conduct audits of case files, risk assessments, and support plans.
· Identify areas for service improvement and implement changes where necessary.
· Contribute to reporting requirements and service reviews.
Essential Criteria
Car User Requirement
This is a car user role, and the postholder will be required to have access to a vehicle for work-related duties.
Experience
· Significant experience working with vulnerable adults within mental health, homelessness, or social care services.
· Experience of supervising or leading staff within a similar setting.
Knowledge
· Strong understanding of relevant legislation, including the Care Act 2014, Homelessness Reduction Act 2017, and safeguarding frameworks.
· Knowledge of mental health pathways and multi-agency working.
Skills
· Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to assess, manage, and mitigate risk effectively.
· Conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.
· Ability to manage competing priorities and work under pressure.
· IT proficiency, including case management systems and reporting tools.
