Trainee Gas Engineer

Job Purpose:
The Trainee Gas Engineer role forms a key part of the Gas Compliance succession planning programme and has been established to develop future Gas Quality Assurance Engineers and technical compliance specialists within CFM
Reporting directly to the National Gas Compliance Manager, the successful candidate will undertake a structured development programme designed to support completion of their Commercial Gas Managed Learning Programme, achievement of ACS Commercial Gas Qualifications and development of practical engineering competence across commercial gas systems and infrastructure
Working alongside experienced Gas Engineers, Gas Quality Assurance Engineers and the wider Gas Compliance Team, the Trainee Gas Engineer will gain practical experience in commercial gas servicing, maintenance, testing, fault finding, installation support, compliance auditing and technical assurance activities
The role has been deliberately designed to provide a blend of practical engineering experience and gas compliance activities This approach enables the individual to develop both technical competence and compliance expertise whilst providing flexibility to support operational engineering, compliance administration, auditing support and technical assurance activities across the business
Key Accountabilities:
Safety
- Operate in accordance with the CFM Gas Safety Policy and all relevant health and safety procedures
- Work under the supervision of qualified and competent engineers whilst undertaking practical gas engineering activities
- Assist with commercial gas servicing, maintenance, repairs, testing and commissioning activities
- Develop a detailed understanding of Gas Safety Regulations, IGEM standards and approved codes of practice
- Identify, record and report unsafe situations, defects and non-conformances
- Promote safe systems of work and positive safety behaviours at all times
- Develop an understanding of gas infrastructure and associated compliance risks across the estate
People
- Develop positive working relationships with engineers, compliance personnel, contractors and client representatives
- Demonstrate professionalism and a customer-focused approach when attending client sites
- Support the Gas Compliance Team and wider operational teams where required
- Work collaboratively across departments to achieve compliance and operational objectives
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn, develop and continuously improve
- Promote compliance with company policies and procedures
Excellence
- Complete all elements of the Commercial Gas Managed Learning Programme
- Build and maintain a portfolio of evidence supporting ACS assessment and competency requirements
- Participate in planned training, development activities and competency assessments
- Develop knowledge of commercial gas installations, appliances, pipework systems and associated infrastructure
- Gain experience in gas compliance auditing, quality assurance and contractor assurance activities
- Assist in maintaining gas line diagrams and technical records
- Support the development and maintenance of site-specific gas infrastructure information
- Maintain accurate records relating to training, development and operational activities
- Participate in continual professional development
Service
- Assist qualified engineers with servicing, maintenance, repair, testing and installation activities
- Support gas tightness testing and gas installation inspections
- Assist with gas asset verification and validation exercises
- Support the maintenance of gas infrastructure records and site documentation
- Assist with gas defect tracking, compliance reporting and remedial action monitoring
- Review gas certification, maintenance documentation and contractor records under supervision
- Support gas audits, inspections and quality assurance activities
- Attend site visits, project meetings, compliance reviews and inspections as required
- Assist with contractor documentation reviews and compliance checks
- Support technical investigations and root cause analysis activities where required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Essential
- GCSE/Standard qualifications including English, Mathematics and Science
- Currently undertaking or enrolled on a Commercial Gas Managed Learning Programme
- Strong interest in commercial gas engineering, technical compliance and quality assurance
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong attention to detail
- Good organisational and planning skills
- Basic IT literacy including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
- Full UK Driving Licence
- Ability and willingness to travel throughout the designated geographical area
- Commitment to completing training, qualifications and competency assessments
Desirable
- Previous experience within facilities management, engineering, building services or maintenance environments
- Knowledge of commercial gas systems and equipment
- Experience working within a customer-facing environment
- Understanding of health and safety legislation
- Experience using CAFM systems
- Previous experience within a compliance, technical administration or engineering support role
