Autism-Informed Tutor / Mentor (Post-16)

ANZUK Education is working with specialist alternative provision partners across West Sussex to recruit an Autism-Informed Tutor / Mentor to provide highly personalised 1:1 education and mentoring for neurodivergent young people. This role is well suited to qualified teachers or experienced tutors seeking flexible, additional work supporting learners who are disengaged from mainstream education due to mental health needs.

The provisions we support work with young people who require low-demand, trauma-informed approaches to learning. Settings prioritise emotional safety, flexibility, and personalised pathways, supporting learners with autism, dyslexia, high anxiety, and emotionally based school non-attendance (EBSA).
The Role – Autism-Informed Tutor / Mentor
You will deliver 1:1 tutoring and mentoring within home or community-based settings, focusing on re-engagement with learning, emotional regulation, and confidence building. The role is responsive and flexible, with hours and locations varying depending on learner need.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering personalised 1:1 education in a trauma-informed, low-pressure environment
- Supporting functional skills in English and Maths using flexible, highly scaffolded approaches
- Building emotional safety, trust, and consistency to support re-engagement with learning
- Supporting communication, self-advocacy, emotional regulation, and independence
- Working with learners experiencing anxiety, shutdowns, masking, sensory overload, and EBSA
- Maintaining clear records of progress, engagement, and wellbeing
- Communicating effectively with families and relevant professionals
Role Requirements – Ideal Candidate Will:
- Have substantial experience working 1:1 with autistic and/or dyslexic learners with high anxiety or EBSA
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of autism-informed and trauma-informed practice
- Be confident delivering or supporting functional skills in English and Maths
- Be emotionally attuned, patient, and adaptable in approach
- Be organised and confident with progress tracking and record-keeping
- Be flexible and able to travel to different locations across West Sussex
Desirable Experience:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS / QTLS) or relevant post-16 tutoring qualification
- Experience within alternative provision, medical tuition, or specialist SEMH / ASD settings
- Familiarity with assistive technology and access arrangements (e.g. readers, scribes, word processors, extended time)
