Overview
We are seeking a skilled HGV Mechanic to join our maintenance team. The HGV Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of the company’s HGV fleet, including skip lorries, hook‑loaders, tippers, and associated vehicles used across waste management and recycling operations. This role offers an excellent opportunity for individuals with a strong mechanical background and relevant technical skills to contribute to the safe and efficient operation of our fleet. The position is paid and suitable for applicants with experience in electrical and mechanical systems, as well as those proficient in fabrication and welding.
Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance & Compliance
- Carry out routine inspections of the HGV fleet in line with DVSA requirements and company procedures.
- Undertake planned preventive maintenance to ensure vehicle reliability and compliance.
- Carry out diagnostic testing and fault finding on mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Perform brake testing on HGVs in accordance with legal and operational standards.
- Conduct pre‑MOT inspections and present vehicles for MOT testing, ensuring all defects are rectified prior to testing.
- Carry out road tests of HGVs as required following repairs or servicing to confirm roadworthiness.
Workshop Operations
- Complete all mechanical repairs and servicing to a high professional standard.
- Accurately record inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities in workshop and fleet management systems.
- Support the Garage Manager in maintaining vehicle availability and minimising fleet downtime.
- Carry out general workshop duties and assist with maintaining the workshop to a high standard of cleanliness, organisation, and safety.
Health, Safety & Environmental Responsibilities
- Comply with all company health and safety policies and procedures at all times.
- Use PPE correctly and follow safe systems of work when carrying out repairs and inspections.
- Identify and report hazards, defects, or unsafe practices immediately.
- Ensure correct handling and disposal of oils, parts, and hazardous waste in line with environmental regulations.
- Promote a safety‑first culture within the workshop and wider operations.
Skills
- Proven experience as a Workshop/Garage Mechanic in transport, waste management, recycling, or heavy‑vehicle environments.
- Strong technical knowledge of HGVs, plant machinery, hydraulics, electrical systems, and diagnostic tools.
- Understanding of DVSA compliance, PMI schedules, and roadworthiness standards.
- Experience managing a workshop team and coordinating workloads.
- Strong organisational and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and prioritise urgent repairs.
- Competent in using fleet‑management systems and Microsoft Office.
- Excellent communication skills with drivers, mechanics, and operational teams.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to make decisions quickly.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable Criteria:
- Relevant mechanical qualifications such as NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or equivalent.
- Experience within waste management or recycling fleet operations.
- Knowledge of skip lorries, hook‑loaders, RoRo vehicles, and plant equipment.
- Brake tester certification.
- Health and Safety training or awareness.
Pay: £44,000.00-£49,000.00 per year
