About Bytronic
Bytronic is an engineering and technology business specialising in machine vision, automation, AI-enabled inspection, and industrial software solutions. We work with leading manufacturers and global brands to solve complex production, quality, and traceability challenges through advanced inspection and automation systems.
Our work spans sectors including food, automotive, logistics, and industrial manufacturing. We combine deep technical capability with practical delivery, developing robust, high-performance solutions that operate in demanding production environments.
As part of our continued growth, we are looking for an Applications Vision Engineer to support the development, testing, and deployment of machine vision solutions across a wide range of customer applications.
Role Overview
The Applications Vision Engineer will play a key role in assessing customer requirements, proving technical feasibility, developing inspection methods, and supporting the delivery of machine vision solutions into live industrial environments.
This role is well suited to an engineer who enjoys practical problem solving, customer-facing technical work, and the challenge of building robust inspection solutions using cameras, optics, lighting, software, AI tools, and industrial integration.
You will work across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility trials and proof of concept activity through to development, commissioning, and customer support.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess customer applications and define suitable machine vision inspection approaches.
- Conduct feasibility studies, image trials, and proof of concept work to determine technical viability.
- Develop and test vision solutions using cameras, optics, lighting, sensors, and software tools.
- Support the design and implementation of inspection systems for defect detection, measurement, presence verification, OCR, code reading, alignment, and process monitoring.
- Work with software, controls, and project engineering teams to integrate vision solutions into complete automation systems.
- Assist with system setup, calibration, tuning, validation, and commissioning.
- Analyse customer samples, captured images, and production data to improve inspection performance and reliability.
- Create technical reports, feasibility summaries, test results, and supporting documentation for internal and customer use.
- Support proposal generation by helping define solution architecture, technical risk, and scope.
- Provide technical input during customer meetings, site visits, and project reviews.
- Contribute to continuous improvement in vision methods, application standards, testing processes, and technology selection.
- Support fault finding and technical problem solving during build, installation, and live production phases.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Degree or equivalent experience in Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, Software, or a related technical discipline.
- Experience in machine vision, industrial inspection, automation, or a related engineering field.
- Good understanding of vision system fundamentals including cameras, lenses, lighting, field of view, resolution, and image quality.
- Ability to approach inspection challenges in a structured and practical way.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Good communication skills, including the ability to explain technical issues clearly to colleagues and customers.
- Willingness to work in a hands-on engineering environment and support on-site activities when required.
- Ability to produce clear technical notes, reports, and documentation.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- Experience with machine vision software platforms such as Cognex, Zebra, Keyence, Halcon, OpenCV, or similar.
- Experience with deep learning or AI-based vision tools for classification, anomaly detection, or defect inspection.
- Familiarity with PLCs, industrial communications, and factory automation integration.
- Experience with OCR, barcode reading, metrology, thermal imaging, 3D vision, or surface inspection.
- Basic programming capability in C#, Python, or C++.
- Experience in food, automotive, packaging, logistics, or industrial manufacturing applications.
- Understanding of real-world production constraints such as cycle time, variation, contamination, reflectivity, and mechanical tolerances.
What We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate will be:
- Curious, practical, and motivated by solving difficult real-world inspection problems.
- Comfortable working both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
- Interested in the combination of optics, software, hardware, AI, and automation.
- Professional and customer-focused, with a strong sense of engineering ownership.
- Able to balance technical performance with practical deployment in live manufacturing environments.
- Keen to develop technically and contribute to the growth of a forward-looking technology business.
