About Us
The Bear is a lively, family run activity bar and restaurant located in the heart of Newton Abbot. We offer a unique social experience where great food, drinks, and entertainment come together.
Our venue combines a vibrant bar and restaurant space with a spacious beer garden and a range of interactive games including beer pong, cornhole, darts, football pool, mini golf beer pign with axe throwing and karaoke on the way creating a fun and energetic atmosphere for our guests.
Food is an important part of the experience at The Bear. Our menu focuses on street food style favourites, with stacked burgers, loaded dirty fries, and sharers being among our most popular dishes. We’re also well known locally for our all day, every day bottomless brunch, which has become one of our busiest and most exciting services.
As we continue to grow, we’re looking for a sous Chef to lead the kitchen, maintain consistency and quality, and help develop the menu as the venue evolves.
The Role
We are looking for a passionate and reliable sous chef to help run the kitchen at The Bear.
This is a hands on role for a chef who enjoys working in a fast paced environment, leading a team, and delivering consistently great food during busy services.
You’ll be responsible for managing the day to day kitchen operations while ensuring the food offering supports the fun, social atmosphere that The Bear is known for.
Key Responsibilities
- Leading and managing the kitchen team
- Maintaining consistency and quality across the menu
- Managing stock control, ordering, and supplier relationships
- Ensuring smooth service during busy periods, including brunch services
- Maintaining kitchen cleanliness and food safety standards
- Managing food GP and minimising waste
- Supporting menu development and specials where appropriate
- Working closely with management to ensure the kitchen runs efficiently
What We’re Looking For
- Previous experience as a Sous Chef or CDP ready to step up
- Experience working in a busy kitchen environment
- Strong organisational skills
- Ability to manage stock, ordering, and kitchen costs
- Someone who takes pride in delivering consistent, good-quality food
- Level 2 Food Hygiene (minimum)
