Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced, driven and commercially minded Business Development Manager to help grow our van rental and leasing business, with a primary focus on developing the long-term van rental division.
This is a proactive, field-based sales role suited to someone who already understands the van rental, vehicle leasing, commercial vehicle or fleet sector. The successful candidate will be responsible for generating their own leads, arranging and attending meetings, building relationships with businesses, and converting opportunities into long-term rental customers.
You will be expected to identify businesses that operate vans, understand their fleet requirements, and offer practical rental and leasing solutions that support their day-to-day operations. While the main focus of the role is long-term van rental, there will also be opportunities to generate income through van sales, leasing, finance and other commercial vehicle solutions.
This role would suit someone who is confident meeting business owners, fleet managers and decision-makers, and who is comfortable managing the full sales process from prospecting through to customer onboarding.
Key Responsibilities
Business Development & Lead Generation
- Identify and target businesses that operate vans and light commercial vehicles.
- Generate your own leads through cold calling, networking, referrals, LinkedIn, site visits, local business outreach and other proactive methods.
- Arrange and attend face-to-face meetings with potential customers.
- Build and maintain a strong pipeline of rental, leasing and vehicle sales opportunities.
- Develop relationships with businesses that require long-term van rental, fleet support or vehicle replacement solutions.
- Research local and regional markets to identify new customer opportunities.
Van Rental
- Promote long-term van rental solutions to businesses with ongoing vehicle requirements.
- Understand customer needs, including:
- Vehicle type
- Contract length
- Usage
- Mileage
- Delivery requirements
- Future fleet plans
- Work with the wider team to match customers with suitable rental vehicles and terms.
- Convert enquiries and self-generated opportunities into active rental agreements.
- Maintain regular contact with customers to encourage:
- Repeat business
- Contract extensions
- Additional vehicle requirements
- Referrals
Leasing, Sales & Wider Vehicle Solutions
- Identify opportunities to support customers with:
- Van leasing
- Finance lease
- Hire purchase
- Contract hire
- Vehicle sales
- Introduce customers to the appropriate internal process for quotes, finance options and vehicle sourcing.
- Cross-sell additional commercial vehicle solutions where they meet the customer’s business needs.
Account Management
- Build long-term relationships with customers and become their trusted contact for vehicle requirements.
- Manage customer expectations professionally from initial enquiry through to delivery and ongoing support.
- Keep in regular contact with active and prospective customers to identify further opportunities.
- Maintain accurate records of:
- Prospects
- Meetings
- Quotes
- Follow-ups
- Customer activity
- Use the CRM system consistently and accurately.
Sales Performance
- Work towards agreed sales targets for:
- New rental customers
- Vehicles on hire
- Rental revenue
- Leasing and sales opportunities
- Overall business growth
- Manage your own diary, appointments, pipeline and follow-up activity.
- Provide regular updates on:
- Sales activity
- New opportunities
- Market feedback
- Competitor activity
- Customer requirements
- Represent the business professionally at all times when visiting customers, attending meetings or networking.
What We’re Looking For
- Previous experience in one or more of the following is essential: Van rental, Vehicle leasing, Commercial vehicle sales, Fleet sales or a closely related automotive role
- Proven ability to generate your own leads and win new business.
- Experience attending customer meetings and managing a business-to-business sales process.
- Strong understanding of vans, light commercial vehicles, rental agreements, leasing or fleet requirements.
- Confident communication skills
- A proactive, self-motivated approach with the ability to manage your own diary and pipeline.
- Strong relationship-building skills and a professional approach to customer service.
- Commercial awareness and the ability to identify profitable opportunities.
- Comfortable using CRM systems, email, phone and LinkedIn as part of the sales process.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- Existing contacts within industries that regularly use vans
- Experience selling; Long-term rental, Flexible rental, Contract hire, Finance lease, Hire purchase
- Knowledge of commercial vehicle specifications
- Experience working to targets in a field sales or business development role.
