Mechanical Build Engineer – Hydraulics & Bespoke Machinery
Location: Kingswinford, with UK and international travel
Salary: £17.71–£18.50 per hour
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Overtime: Available when required
Build machinery from the ground up
Are you a hands-on Mechanical Engineer or Mechanical Fitter with experience in hydraulics, machine building or fluid power systems?
This is an exciting opportunity to join a specialist engineering environment where you will build, assemble and install bespoke machinery for customers across the UK and internationally.
Unlike repetitive production roles, every project presents a new technical challenge. You will be involved throughout the full machine-build process—from assembling individual components and hydraulic systems through to testing, commissioning and installing completed machinery on customer sites.
This position would suit an experienced Mechanical Fitter, Machine Tool Fitter, Mechanical Build Engineer, Hydraulic Fitter or Special-Purpose Machinery Engineer who enjoys practical engineering and seeing a complete machine come together.
What you’ll be doing
- Building and assembling mechanical sub-assemblies and complete bespoke machines
- Installing hydraulic, pneumatic and lubrication systems
- Reading and working from mechanical drawings, hydraulic schematics and pneumatic diagrams
- Fitting hydraulic hoses, pipework, cylinders, valves, pumps and manifolds
- Assembling components such as spindles, clamps, guarding, conveyors and automation equipment
- Integrating individual assemblies into complete machine builds
- Carrying out mechanical fault-finding, adjustments and build improvements
- Supporting machine testing and commissioning
- Inspecting components using measuring and inspection equipment
- Identifying build issues and working with engineering and production teams to resolve them
- Using workshop machinery, including lathes, milling machines and surface grinders, where required
- Supporting machinery installation, upgrades and breakdown work at customer sites
- Maintaining high standards of workmanship, quality and health and safety
What we’re looking for
You will need a strong practical mechanical background and experience working with machinery, hydraulics or fluid power equipment.
Essential experience
- Mechanical fitting, machinery assembly or machine-build experience

- Strong mechanical fault-finding and problem-solving skills
- Good attention to detail and pride in the quality of your work
- Ability to work independently and as part of a wider engineering team
- Flexibility to work overtime and travel to customer sites when required
- Permanent eligibility to work in the UK
Experience that would be advantageous
- Bespoke machinery or special-purpose machine-building experience
- Machine tool fitting experience
- Knowledge of hydraulic clamps, cylinders, spindles, valves, pumps or manifolds
- Machinery installation or commissioning experience
- Basic manual machining, including turning, milling or surface grinding
- Crane, forklift or lifting-equipment experience
- Exposure to LEAN manufacturing or continuous improvement
Qualifications
Applications are welcomed from candidates with any of the following:
- City & Guilds in Mechanical Engineering
- BTEC in Mechanical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship
- Time-served Mechanical Fitter or Machine Tool Fitter background
- Equivalent hands-on machinery-build experience
Why apply?
- Work on varied, technically interesting bespoke machinery
- Avoid repetitive production-line assembly
- Be involved in projects from initial build through to installation
- Develop your experience across hydraulics, pneumatics and mechanical systems
- Opportunity for UK and international travel
- Overtime available when required
- Stable, permanent position within a specialist engineering environment
