Job Title: Grounds & Buildings Maintenance Working Supervisor
Responsible to: The Town Clerk
Hours: 37 hours per week (full time)
Salary: SCP 18 (£31,537) - pay award pending
Purpose of the Role
The Grounds & Buildings Maintenance Working Supervisor is responsible for the supervision, coordination and delivery of grounds and building maintenance services across all Council-owned land, buildings, open spaces and facilities.
The postholder will lead by example, undertaking practical maintenance work alongside supervising staff, contractors and volunteers where appropriate. The role aims to ensure that Council assets are maintained to a high standard, providing a safe, attractive and welcoming environment for residents and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Grounds Maintenance
· Plan, organise and undertake routine grounds maintenance activities.
· Supervise the maintenance of parks, open spaces, recreational areas, cemeteries and other Council-owned land.
· Carry out and oversee grass cutting, hedge trimming, shrub pruning, planting and weed control.
· Ensure public areas are kept clean, tidy and free from litter.
· Monitor grounds maintenance standards and identify areas for improvement.
· Maintain trees, flower beds and landscaped areas as required.
Buildings and Facilities Maintenance
· Undertake routine inspections of Council buildings, community facilities and other assets.
· Carry out minor repairs and maintenance works where appropriate.
· Report defects and organise repairs requiring specialist contractors.
· Monitor the condition of Council property and equipment and recommend maintenance programmes.
· Assist in preparing facilities for events and community activities.
Supervision and Team Leadership
· Supervise, support and develop grounds maintenance staff and any temporary or seasonal workers and volunteers.
· Allocate and monitor workloads to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
· Provide guidance, instruction and support to team members.
· Assist with staff induction, training and development.
· Monitor attendance, performance and compliance with Council procedures.
· Provide holiday and sickness cover where required.
Health and Safety
· Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with Health and Safety legislation and Council policies.
· Undertake routine risk assessments and report hazards promptly.
· Ensure the safe operation, maintenance and storage of machinery, vehicles and equipment.
· Promote a safe working environment and safe working practices.
· Ensure appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is used at all times.
Vehicles, Machinery and Equipment
· Operate and maintain grounds maintenance equipment, machinery and vehicles safely.
· Carry out routine checks and basic maintenance of equipment.
· Keep records of inspections, servicing and repairs.
· Report faults and arrange repairs when necessary.
Contractor and Asset Management
· Liaise with contractors carrying out work on behalf of the Council.
· Monitor contractor performance and ensure work is completed to the required standard.
· Assist with maintaining inventories of Council equipment and assets.
· Report maintenance requirements and improvement opportunities to the Town Clerk.
Community and Public Relations
· Act professionally and courteously when dealing with members of the public.
· Respond positively to enquiries and requests where appropriate.
· Support community events and activities as required by the Council.
· Promote a positive image of the Council at all times.
Person Specification
Essential
· Experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, horticulture, property maintenance or a similar field.
· Ability to supervise and organise the work of others.
· Practical maintenance and repair skills.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Good communication and organisational skills.
· Knowledge of health and safety requirements relevant to the role.
· Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
· Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
· Experience of supervising staff or contractors.
· Experience operating tractors, ride-on mowers or similar machinery.
· Relevant qualifications in grounds maintenance, horticulture or building maintenance.
· Health and Safety qualification.
· First Aid qualification.
· PA1/PA6 pesticide certification or equivalent.
General
The postholder may be required to work occasional additional hours to support Council events, emergencies or operational requirements.
