RSPCA Staffordshire North Branch – Shop Manager, Bradwell Shop
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Charity Shop Manager to join our retail team.
We’re looking for a commercially minded Shop Manager to join us in our highly respected and succesful shop in Bradwell. In this varied and exciting role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the shop is at the hub of the local community, serving as the RSPCA Staffordshire North Branch's public face and raising public awareness of our charity's work.
Our shops are vital to our success, and by using your retail experience to drive business, push sales and achieve targets, you'll be helping us to rescue hundreds of animals from cruelty, abuse and neglect every year.
Managing our Bradwell shop, you will need to be commercially aware, driven, well organised, and hands-on. You'll need to have creative flair, to maintain the excellent standards already in place for the presentation of the shop floor and window displays. You'll need the experience, dedication and proven leadership skills to motivate a team of staff and volunteers to maximise profits and help us raise the vital funds to fight animal cruelty across North Staffordshire. Job Title: Shop Manager – Bradwell Shop
Responsible to: Branch Manager
Directly Managing: 1 x Shop Assistant, Team of Volunteers
Hours of Work: 28 hours (4 days) per week, including Saturday
Annual Leave: 16 days per year plus statutory Bank Holidays
Salary: £19,K - £1 Dependent on Experience
Purpose of the Job
To ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the shop. To maximise shop sales, maintain effective stock management, control direct shop expenses in line with annual budgetary provisions and to recruit and retain a motivated team of volunteers, whilst working within Branch and Society policy, and promoting the work of the RSPCA.
Principal Tasks & Responsibilities
Shop Management
- Day-to-day responsibility for managing the shop
- Ensure effective stock rotation and display
- To provide excellent customer care through quality of service, dealing with complaints both efficiently and effectively, and having a working knowledge of the Branch
- To be responsible for opening and closing the shop at the agreed times, and ensuring opening hours are strictly adhered to
- Brief the Branch Manager at regular intervals on progress in the shop
- Identify opportunities for improvements in operations and, in agreement with the Branch Manager, take action as appropriate.
- Maintain an awareness of developments in other local shops, especially in the charity sector, updating the Branch Manager as required
- Maintain and develop good channels of communication with Branch customers and colleagues in other Branch shops, local communities and organisations
- To comply with all current legislation and Branch policy, including: Health and Safety, Trading Standards, Inland Revenue, VAT and Retail Law
- Provide cover for Shop Managers in other stores if required by the Branch.
Optimising Sales
- Ensure the shop meets any sales targets set by the Branch Manager
- Initiate marketing and sales promotions to increase sales, including seasonal campaigns
- Ensure the shop is competing effectively with local competitors
- Ensure all shop staff and volunteers maintain a high standard of customer care
- Promote the store in the local community
Maintaining Effective Stock Management & Merchandising
- Control the pricing of items for sale
- Ensure the highest possible resale value of donated stock
- Apply excellent display, merchandising and window dressing standards
- Proactive stock generation when necessary (e.g. Agreements with local businesses and wider community)
- Control stock density and rotation
- Initiate local stock and sales promotions
Staff/Volunteer Management & Training
- To act as a line manager to any deputies or assistants and successfully delegate tasks to staff according to their strengths. To identify and address the training needs of staff
- Provide adequate supervision for staff and volunteers
- Recruit, induct and manage volunteers
- Lead and develop the staff/volunteer team in the shop, encouraging effective communication, setting objectives, initiating work plans and helping to foster a positive team spirit through regular team and 1-2-1 meetings
Administration
- Apply Trading Standards Regulations in the shop and ensure staff and volunteers are aware of these
- To ensure minimum losses of both stock and cash by following bank and till procedures, and safeguarding the property of the Branch at all times
- Apply cash register procedures
- Take action to ensure the shop is adequately staffed, setting and maintaining rotas
- Summarise and report takings using agreed procedures
- Reporting monthly to the Branch Committee
Premises Management
- To maintain high levels of shop presentation by merchandising and housekeeping to agreed standards.
- Take day-to-day responsibility for the shop interior
- Ensure all shop equipment is kept in good working order
- Promptly inform the Branch Manager of necessary repairs and maintenance issues
Security
- Act as the main key holder and delegate key holding to other staff members within procedural guidelines
- Ensure the security of shop takings
- Provide the best circumstances for the personal security of staff and volunteers
- Ensure that security procedures are understood and implemented by all staff and volunteers
Health & Safety
- Apply the organisation’s Health & Safety policy
- Ensure that health and safety procedures are understood and implemented by all staff and volunteers
General
- Carry out all tasks and responsibilities with an understanding of and commitment to the Branch's equal opportunities policy
- Use new technology as required
- Keep the Branch's property secure and in good working order
- Carry out any other duties deemed appropriate by the Branch Manager
