We are a successful and growing payroll company based in Exeter city centre, looking for an experienced, organised and motivated Office Manager / Personal Assistant to join our team.
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, this is a key leadership role responsible for the smooth day-to-day operation of the business. As well as providing high-level support to the Managing Director, you will supervise and support the office team, drive continuous improvements, champion compliance, and help deliver an exceptional customer experience.

Key Responsibilities
- Act as the primary support to the Managing Director, providing confidential and proactive administrative and organisational assistance.
- Oversee the day-to-day running of the office, ensuring operations are efficient, productive and well organised.
- Supervise, motivate and support the office team, encouraging high performance, accountability and professional development.
- Lead by example, fostering a positive, collaborative and customer-focused working culture.
- Manage workloads across the team, ensuring deadlines are met and resources are effectively allocated.
- Drive business improvements by identifying opportunities to enhance processes, increase efficiency and embed best practice.
- Support the implementation of new systems, procedures and ways of working, helping the team adapt positively to change.
- Champion excellent customer service by ensuring client enquiries and issues are handled professionally, promptly and effectively.
- Monitor service standards and work with the team to continuously improve the customer experience.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, payroll procedures and relevant employment and data protection legislation.
- Promote a strong culture of legal and regulatory compliance, ensuring processes are followed accurately and consistently.
- Assist with payroll administration and compliance activities where required.
- Coordinate meetings, manage diaries, prepare reports and maintain accurate business records.
- Build strong relationships with clients, suppliers and colleagues, acting as a professional ambassador for the business.
About You
The successful candidate will be an organised and confident leader who enjoys supporting others while maintaining high operational standards.
You will have:
- Previous experience in an Office Manager, Operations Manager, Personal Assistant or similar leadership role.
- Experience supervising, mentoring or managing a team.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A proactive approach with the confidence to make decisions and solve problems.
- Experience driving change and implementing improvements to business processes.
- A passion for delivering outstanding customer service.
- A strong understanding of the importance of legal, regulatory and procedural compliance.
- Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
- The ability to remain calm, flexible and organised in a busy environment.
Desirable
- Knowledge of payroll processes and payroll legislation.
- Experience working within a payroll, finance, HR or professional services environment.
- Familiarity with compliance requirements, including employment legislation, GDPR and payroll-related regulations.
- Experience supporting organisational change or continuous improvement initiatives.
