Job Overview
We are seeking a friendly, reliable, and hard-working Shop Counter Assistant to join our small, independent retail team in Elgin. As the main face of our shop, you will welcome local customers, serve premium fresh products, and maintain an immaculate store environment. No previous specialized trade experience is required, but a warm personality and excellent communication skills are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service & Sales
- Customer Care: Greet every visitor warmly, take accurate orders, and wrap products neatly.
- Product Knowledge: Learn about our locally sourced produce to confidently answer basic customer questions.
- Transaction Handling: Operate the electronic point-of-sale (EPOS) till system, process cash and card payments, and issue receipts.
Stock Management & Display
- Counter Merchandising: Restock display counters, shelves, and cabinets throughout the day to ensure they look full and appealing.
- Ticket Management: Ensure all items are correctly priced with clean, visible labels.
- Stock Rotation: Follow strict "First In, First Out" procedures to guarantee product freshness.
Cleanliness & Food Safety
- Daily Cleaning: Wipe down counters, clean scales, sweep floors, and wash display trays regularly.
- Hygiene Compliance: Wear clean protective uniform/aprons and strictly follow food handling hygiene standards.
- Temperature Checks: Assist in monitoring and logging display fridge temperatures.
Requirements & Experience
- Traits: Reliable, punctual, and comfortable working in a fast-paced retail environment.
- Skills: Strong basic math skills for cash handling and excellent spoken English.
- Availability: Flexibility to work flexible retail shifts, including early mornings and Saturdays.
- Experience: Previous experience in retail, hospitality, or customer service is a plus, but full training will be provided.
- Location: Based in Elgin or able to commute reliably to the shop center.
