Location: The Orwell Care Home - IP9 2AE
Reports To: Registered Manager
Shifts: Monday to Friday 0900 until 1700 (and emergencies)
Job Purpose
To ensure the residential care home is maintained to a safe, clean, compliant, and high standard at all times. The Maintenance Assistant will carry out general repairs, routine maintenance, health and safety checks, and support the smooth day-to-day running of the home to provide a safe and comfortable environment for residents, visitors, and staff.
Key ResponsibilitiesGeneral Maintenance
- Carry out day-to-day maintenance and repair tasks throughout the home.
- Complete basic DIY duties including painting, decorating, carpentry, and minor building repairs.
- Undertake basic plumbing tasks such as changing taps, fixing leaks, unblocking sinks, and minor pipework repairs.
- Carry out minor electrical maintenance where competent to do so.
- Ensure all bedrooms, communal areas, and external grounds are kept in good condition.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Conduct regular health and safety checks across the home.
- Complete and record routine maintenance inspections and safety audits.
- Support compliance with CQC regulations and company policies.
- Report hazards, defects, or major repair requirements promptly to management.
- Ensure fire exits, walkways, and emergency equipment remain accessible and compliant at all times.
PAT Testing & Equipment Safety
- Carry out Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) where qualified/trained.
- Maintain accurate records of appliance testing and maintenance schedules.
- Ensure equipment and facilities are safe and fit for use.
External Contractors
- Liaise with approved contractors and external engineers when required.
- Escort contractors on-site and ensure work is completed safely and to the required standard.
- Monitor and report on completed maintenance works.
Grounds & Environment
- Maintain outdoor areas including gardens, pathways, fencing, and car parks.
- Ensure the premises remain tidy, safe, and welcoming at all times.
- Assist with adverse weather preparations when required.
Moving & Handling / Equipment
- Assemble furniture and equipment as required.
- Support with room moves and setting up equipment for residents.
- Carry out checks on wheelchairs, beds, hoists, and other non-clinical equipment where appropriate.
Person SpecificationEssential Skills & Experience
- Previous maintenance or handyman experience.
- Good general DIY skills.
- Basic plumbing and repair knowledge.
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Reliable, trustworthy, and professional approach.
Desirable
- PAT Testing qualification or experience.
- Experience working within a care home, healthcare, or similar environment.
- Basic understanding of CQC requirements.
- Knowledge of fire safety procedures.
Working Conditions
- The role may involve occasional heavy lifting and manual handling.
- Flexibility may be required to respond to emergency maintenance issues.
- Appropriate PPE and equipment will be provided.

The post holder will be expected to safeguard and promote the welfare of vulnerable adults and work in line with safeguarding policies and procedures at all times.
Pay: £12.85 per hour
