Caretaker (Secondary School)
Location: Swindon
Pay Rate: £16.73–£18.00 per hour (dependent on experience)
Job Purpose
We are seeking a reliable and proactive School Caretaker to ensure the school premises remain safe, secure, clean, and well maintained for pupils, staff, and visitors. The successful candidate will play a key role in the day-to-day operation of the school site, carrying out maintenance tasks, overseeing site security, supporting health and safety compliance, and helping to create a positive learning environment.
The role may also include providing support to other schools within the Trust when required.
Key ResponsibilitiesSite Maintenance and Facilities
- Carry out routine maintenance, repairs, and preventative maintenance across the school buildings and grounds.
- Identify, report, and where appropriate, rectify maintenance issues or arrange repairs through approved contractors.
- Ensure classrooms, communal areas, and external spaces are safe, clean, and fit for purpose.
- Assist contractors on site and monitor works to ensure they are completed safely and efficiently.
- Support with furniture moves, deliveries, room layouts, and general site preparation.
Health and Safety
- Conduct regular site inspections to identify hazards and maintain compliance with health and safety legislation.
- Support the implementation of risk assessments and safe working practices.
- Carry out routine checks of fire safety equipment, emergency exits, alarms, and other safety systems.
- Report accidents, incidents, hazards, and maintenance concerns promptly.
- Ensure all work is undertaken in accordance with health and safety procedures.
Security and Site Management
- Open and secure the school premises each day in accordance with agreed procedures.
- Operate and monitor security systems, alarms, access control, and safeguarding measures.
- Respond to emergency situations and out-of-hours call-outs where required.
- Maintain the overall security of the site during and outside normal school hours.
Cleaning and Grounds Maintenance
- Monitor cleaning standards and work closely with cleaning teams to maintain a high-quality environment.
- Carry out basic grounds maintenance, including pathways, external areas, and seasonal upkeep.
- Ensure waste disposal and recycling procedures are followed effectively.
School and Community Support
- Prepare rooms and facilities for meetings, examinations, events, and school activities.
- Support the hire and community use of school facilities when required.
- Provide a professional, helpful, and responsive service to staff, pupils, visitors, and contractors.
Person SpecificationEssential Experience and Skills
- Previous experience in caretaking, facilities management, building maintenance, or a similar role.
- Practical ability to undertake general repairs and routine maintenance.
- Good knowledge of health and safety legislation and safe working practices.
- Ability to prioritise workloads, work independently, and use initiative.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Reliable, flexible, and able to adapt to the changing needs of the school.
Desirable
- Previous experience working within a school or educational environment.
- Health and Safety, Fire Safety, First Aid, or other relevant qualifications.
- Experience coordinating contractors and monitoring compliance.
- Full UK driving licence.
