We are seeking a dedicated, experienced, and compassionate Senior Residential Support Worker to join a well-established children’s residential service supporting young people with learning disabilities, autism, complex needs, and behaviours that may challenge.

As a senior member of the team, you will combine hands-on care with leadership responsibilities, helping to ensure high standards of care, consistency of practice, and positive outcomes for every child in our service.
Role Overview
As a Senior Residential Support Worker, you will play a vital role in supporting Looked After Children with learning disabilities and additional complex needs, many of whom may experience communication difficulties, sensory needs, emotional dysregulation, and behaviours of concern.
You will provide high-quality, person-centred care while supporting the day-to-day running of the home. Working closely with management and the wider care team, you will help implement therapeutic care plans, lead shifts, provide guidance to junior staff, and ensure children receive consistent support that promotes emotional wellbeing, independence, and stability.
Your ability to remain calm under pressure, build trusting relationships, and confidently lead during challenging situations will be essential to success in this role.
Senior / Leadership Responsibilities
- Lead shifts confidently, ensuring safe staffing, effective delegation, and smooth day-to-day operations within the home.
- Provide leadership cover in the absence of senior staff or management.
- Support, mentor, coach, and guide junior team members to encourage professional development and best practice.
- Model high standards of care, professionalism, and safeguarding practice.
- Contribute to staff supervision, team meetings, training sessions, and service development initiatives.
- Assist with rota planning, shift coordination, and ensuring continuity of care across the team.
Care Planning & Administration
- Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely records reflecting young people’s progress, behaviours, and achievements.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary meetings, care reviews, placement planning, and professional discussions.
- Produce high-quality social, behavioural, and emotional progress reports when required.
- Support the ongoing review and development of individual care plans and behaviour support strategies.
General Responsibilities
- Transport young people safely to school, appointments, family contact, and community activities (driving is essential).
- Help maintain a clean, safe, welcoming, and homely environment that promotes comfort and security.
- Participate in sleep-in shifts as required (flexibility available).
- Undertake additional reasonable duties to support the effective running of the service.
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- Experienced in supporting children or young people with learning disabilities, autism, complex needs, or behaviours that challenge
- Knowledgeable in trauma-informed care, attachment, child development, and therapeutic practice
- Calm, resilient, and confident when managing complex or high-pressure situations
- A strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills
- Organised, proactive, and able to make sound decisions under pressure
- Naturally supportive with proven leadership capability or strong leadership potential
Essential Requirements
- Level 3 or Level 4 qualification in Residential Childcare
- Full UK Driving Licence
- Right to work full-time in the UK (no restrictions)
- Previous experience working within children’s residential care, support work, or a similar care setting
- Previous experience in a senior, shift-leading, or supervisory role
- Experience supporting young people with learning disabilities and complex behavioural presentations
