Sunderland College has been delivering highly successful courses for more than 20 years and is one of the largest providers of post-16 education in the North East with approximately 14,300 students.
The College has two campuses across the city of Sunderland, offering a wide range of academic and vocational provision for school leavers and adults. Taking Teaching Further & Additional Incentives
If you’re making the move into further education teaching, you may be eligible for the Taking Teaching Further (TTF) programme a funded route to help industry professionals retrain as FE teachers.
In addition, for roles in high-need subjects or regions you may also benefit from the government’s targeted retention incentive (formerly “levelling-up premium”) payments, worth up to £6,000 for eligible teachers in their first five years and teaching certain shortage subjects.
Please note eligibility for both TTF and the Targeted Retention Incentive varies by role, subject area and provider, they do not apply to every vacancy.

About the Candidate
As a Learning Practitioner, you will support the delivery of a career-focused Uniformed Public Services curriculum, helping learners develop the knowledge, behaviours and practical skills required for progression into public service careers, higher education, apprenticeships or employment. You will support practical, scenario-based and classroom learning linked to areas such as teamwork, leadership, discipline, communication, fitness, outdoor education, emergency response and wider public service expectations. You will also contribute to a changemaking curriculum that encourages learners to think critically, take responsibility, develop confidence and understand how they can make a positive difference within their communities and future public service roles.
About the Role
Are you passionate about supporting learners to develop the skills, confidence and behaviours needed for careers in the Uniformed Public Services? As a Learning Practitioner for Uniformed Public Services, you will support the delivery of a career-focused and changemaking curriculum that prepares learners for progression into public service careers, higher education, apprenticeships or employment.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a growing and ambitious curriculum area where practical learning, sector standards and learner progression are at the heart of what we do. You will help learners develop practical and academic skills through engaging classroom delivery, scenario-based learning and practical activities linked to teamwork, leadership, discipline, communication, fitness, outdoor education, emergency response and wider public service expectations. You will plan, deliver and assess high-quality learning, supporting students to remain engaged, make progress and achieve their full potential.
You will also contribute to the development of digital learning platforms and resources, using learning technologies to enhance the student experience and support learners to develop the digital skills needed for their future careers. This role offers the opportunity to develop your own teaching practice, engage in professional development and work as part of a supportive curriculum team. You will play an important role in helping learners think critically, take responsibility, build resilience and understand how they can make a positive difference within their communities and future public service roles.
Role Responsibilities

Plan, deliver and assess high-quality, sequenced learning that supports a career-focused Uniformed Public Services curriculum.

Support students to develop the knowledge, behaviours and practical skills required for progression into uniformed services, higher education, apprenticeships or employment.

Deliver engaging classroom, practical and scenario-based learning using appropriate student-centred approaches.

Develop and use high-quality digital learning resources and learning technologies to enhance the student experience.

Provide constructive formative and summative assessment feedback that supports learner progress, achievement and aspiration.

Uphold Uniformed Public Services sector standards, college expectations and contribute to quality assurance, improvement and accurate assessment records.
Qualifications
-
Level 3 qualification or above in Uniformed Public Services, Sport, Outdoor Education, Public Services, or a related subject area.

GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4/C or above, or equivalent.

Relevant vocational, teaching, coaching, training or Uniformed public services experience.
Essential Skills & Experience

Relevant experience in Uniformed Public Services, sport, outdoor education, coaching, training, youth work or a related vocational area.

Confidence supporting learners in classroom, practical and scenario-based learning environments.

Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to engage, motivate and support learners to achieve positive outcomes.

Ability to contribute to high-quality learning, assessment, feedback and accurate record keeping.

Confidence using digital tools and learning technologies to support teaching and learning.

Commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, professional standards and continuous improvement.
Desirable Skills & Experience – (Optional)

You will ideally hold a degree or master’s qualification in a relevant area such as Uniformed Public Services, Sport, Outdoor Education, Criminology, Policing, Education or a related subject.

You may also hold, or be working towards, a recognised teaching qualification and have relevant industry experience within the uniformed services, emergency services, armed forces, outdoor sector, sport, coaching or youth development.

You will bring experience of supporting learners in an FE, school, training, coaching or practical learning environment and be confident contributing to curriculum development, enrichment, trips, visits or employer engagement.

You will also have an interest in using digital tools, learning technologies and innovative approaches to enhance the student experience.

You will also have relevant industry experience within related sectors such as the emergency services, armed forces or the outdoor sector.
