SITE ENGINEER / MECHANIC

General Purpose
Responsible for the maintenance, repair and reliability of all site plant, the mobile collection fleet, fixed machinery and the general upkeep of the Ellesmere Port site. Reporting to the Site Operations Manager, the Site Mechanic keeps the processing line, vehicles and equipment safe and fully operational, minimising production downtime through a combination of planned preventative and reactive maintenance, and carrying out fabrication and welding work to repair, modify and manufacture parts as required.
Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs across all site plant and machinery, including the shred line, shredders, balers, conveyors, trommel, loading shovels, telehandlers and generators.
- Maintain, service and repair the collection fleet (3.5t to 18t vehicles) and on-site mobile plant, including diagnostics, defect rectification and keeping vehicles roadworthy.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and basic electrical faults efficiently to keep the site running and minimise downtime.
- Carry out fabrication, welding and metalwork to repair, modify or manufacture parts, guards, brackets and structures as required.
- Respond promptly to breakdowns reported by the shift teams and complete daily and weekly equipment checks.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs and parts and consumables usage for each asset.
- Manage spare parts and consumables stock, and liaise with suppliers and external contractors for parts, servicing and specialist repairs.
- Carry out general site upkeep, including repairs to buildings, fencing, drainage, yard surfaces and welfare facilities.
- Assist with the installation, relocation and commissioning of new plant and equipment.
- Ensure all work is carried out safely and in line with site health, safety and environmental procedures, including safe isolation (LOTO), working at height and hot works permits.
- Keep the workshop clean, organised and compliant, with tools and equipment maintained and calibrated where required.
Skills and Qualifications
- Time-served mechanical or plant fitting background, or a recognised qualification such as NVQ Level 3 in Plant Maintenance, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent - Essential
- Proven welding and fabrication skills (MIG / MMA / TIG) — Essential
- Ability to diagnose and repair hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical systems - Essential
- Confident working independently and prioritising a varied planned and reactive workload - Essential
- Good record-keeping and basic IT skills for logging maintenance - Essential
- Full UK driving licence - Essential
- Basic electrical fault-finding ability - Preferred
- HGV / LGV maintenance experience - Preferred
- Counterbalance, telehandler or other plant operating tickets - Preferred
- Knowledge of safe systems of work, including LOTO, hot works and working at height - Preferred
Experience & Education
The ideal candidate has at least three years' experience maintaining heavy plant, machinery or commercial vehicles, ideally within a recycling, waste, quarrying, manufacturing or similar industrial environment. They will be a confident, hands-on mechanic and a competent welder and fabricator, comfortable diagnosing and repairing a wide range of equipment with minimal supervision. A practical, safety-first approach, reliability and the flexibility to respond to breakdowns are essential.
