ROLE OVERVIEW
Our client is seeking an Assistant Environmental Soils Advisor to support the delivery of construction and utility projects, with a focus on soil handling, earthworks, and agricultural reinstatement.
The role will work closely with senior team members, contractors and project teams to ensure works are carried out in line with Soil Management Plans, method statements, and industry best practice. The position offers an excellent opportunity to develop practical experience in environmental project delivery while ensuring work is completed efficiently and in line with industry best practice.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Soil Management & Handling (Core Focus)
· Oversee soil stripping, storage, and reinstatement operations
· Support assessments of soil conditions (e.g. moisture, plasticity, trafficking thresholds)
· Help identify risks relating to compaction, rutting, and poor soil handling practices
· Assist in correct soil segregation and support soil bund construction and maintenance supervision
· Provide practical input into earthworks and ground condition management
· Ensure compliance with relevant guidance (e.g. Defra Soil Code, CL:AIRE)
Construction & Site Delivery
· Support delivery of construction and infrastructure projects
· Undertake site inspections to monitor earthworks, ground conditions, and reinstatement
· Undertake the preparation and completion of Records of Condition (RoCs), including baseline condition surveys, photographic evidence, and reinstatement sign-off
· Review contractor activities against Soil Management Plans (SMPs) and method statements
Landowner & Stakeholder Liaison
· Assist with communications with landowners, agents and contractors
· Support preparation of notices, agreements, and general correspondence
· Attend site meetings and record actions and outcomes where required
Environmental Schemes & Compliance
· Support environmental compliance across active construction site
· Assist with evidence gathering and documentation for inspections and audits
· Support mapping and data entry using platforms such as LandApp
· Assist with adherence to project-specific environmental plans and constraints
Reporting & Administration
· Assist with site reports, technical notes, and client updates
· Maintain organised project records and trackers
TRAINING PLANS:
This role offers structured training and development in environmental project delivery, soil management, land liaison and regulatory compliance.
· A Personal Development Plan (PDP) will be developed within the first six months of employment
· Training will include a combination of internal learning, external courses and on-the-job experience
· The role provides exposure to a wide range of rural, environmental and infrastructure projects across the UK
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Essential:
· Degree (or working towards) in Agriculture, Soil Science, Environmental Management, Soil Health, or similar
· Strong interest in soil management and construction practices
· Basic understanding of soil structure and handling principles
· Good organisational skills and attention to detail
· Good written and verbal communication skills
· Competent in Microsoft Office
· Willingness to learn and develop professionally in a site-based environment
· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
· Willingness to travel to UK project sites when required
Desirable:
· Understanding of UK farming systems or agri-environment schemes
· Well rounded Agricultural knowledge is beneficial
· Exposure to construction, farming or land-based work
· CSCS or SHEA Health & Safey Card (non-essential as can be provided)
· Experience with mapping or land management platforms such as LandApp or GIS
· Confidence working in both office and site-based environments
The duties of the role may evolve over time in response to changes in legislation, policy, technology or business requirements. Appropriate training will be provided where necessary.
