About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Quantity Surveyor to join McDermid Decorators in Paisley. This role involves managing the commercial aspects of painting and decorating projects, from tender stage through to final account.
You will be responsible for pricing painting packages, preparing tender submissions, reviewing drawings and specifications, and liaising with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors. During project delivery, you will monitor costs, manage variations, prepare valuations, and ensure commercial risks are effectively controlled.
Working closely with site teams and supervisory staff, you will ensure projects are delivered within budget while maintaining the highest standards of quality and compliance.

R.J. McDermid Decorators is a long-established and highly respected painting and decorating contractor based in Paisley, Scotland. Founded in 1973, the company has over 50 years of experience and a strong reputation across Scotland’s Central Belt.
Originally a traditional decorating contractor, the business has evolved into a specialist in the new build housing sector, working with national and regional housebuilders to deliver high-quality finishes.
In October 2025, McDermid Decorators became part of Bell Group, one of the UK’s largest property services contractors. While continuing to operate under its established name, the company now benefits from the additional support, infrastructure, and growth opportunities provided by Bell Group.

Key Responsibilities
- Take ownership of all commercial activities within the branch, including tendering and monthly valuations
- Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and deliver annual forecasts and growth plans
- Monitor costs, manage variations, and ensure financial targets are achieved
- Produce monthly CVRs and performance reports
- Manage invoicing, cost allocations, and debt collection processes
- Audit purchases and timesheets to ensure accuracy and compliance
- Work with Business Development to identify and secure new opportunities
- Develop and manage a portfolio of contracts aligned with client requirements, legislation, H&S, and sustainability
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and integrated management systems (IMS)
- Support a positive company culture aligned with Bell Group’s values
- Liaise with internal teams, clients, and subcontractors to ensure successful project delivery
- Maintain a safe working environment and ensure adherence to operational controls
Skills & Experience
- Strong commercial and financial acumen
- Excellent leadership and communication skills
- Customer-focused approach with strong decision-making ability
- Experience managing a varied portfolio of contracts
- Understanding of building compliance and industry standards
- IT proficient (Excel, MS Project, PowerPoint, Word)
- Experience using ERP systems
- Full UK driving licence
- Commitment to continuous professional development (CPD)
Qualifications
- Essential: BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying
- Preferred: CSCS Card
