We're recruiting for a technically strong Management Accountant to join a highly respected organisation in Winchester. This is a broad and varied role offering the opportunity to combine monthly management reporting, budgeting and forecasting with statutory accounts preparation, audit management and financial compliance across multiple entities.
Working closely with the Head of Finance, you'll play a key role in delivering accurate financial reporting, strengthening financial controls and supporting strategic decision-making. You'll also take ownership of statutory reporting, VAT compliance and year-end audit activities, making this an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys variety and wants exposure across both management and financial accounting.

The Role
Reporting to the Head of Finance, you'll support the full range of finance activities, ensuring the delivery of accurate financial information, effective financial controls and high-quality management reporting.
This is a broad and varied position, offering exposure to management accounting, statutory reporting, financial accounting, budgeting, forecasting, VAT compliance, payroll oversight and business partnering.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare accurate monthly and termly management accounts
- Complete month-end close activities, including journals, accruals, prepayments and balance sheet reconciliations
- Produce financial analysis, commentary and variance reporting
- Monitor income streams, expenditure and key financial metrics
- Support financial modelling and scenario planning
- Assist with reporting for senior leadership and governing bodies
- Contribute to cashflow reporting and balance sheet management
- Oversee the integrity of the general ledger and financial records
- Support payroll processes, ensuring accuracy and compliance
- Maintain fixed asset registers, including additions, disposals and depreciation
Statutory Reporting, Audit & Compliance
- Prepare annual statutory accounts across multiple entities
- Manage the year-end audit process and act as the primary contact for external auditors
- Prepare audit schedules, reconciliations and supporting documentation
- Ensure compliance with Companies Act, Charity Act, VAT, Corporation Tax and Gift Aid requirements
- Maintain strong financial controls and ensure regulatory compliance
- Prepare and review VAT returns and ensure accurate VAT treatment across transactions
- Monitor legislative changes and implement updates where required
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Support the annual budgeting process and work closely with budget holders
- Prepare rolling forecasts and financial projections
- Monitor capital expenditure and provide detailed variance analysis
- Support strategic decision-making through financial modelling and performance analysis
- Assist with KPI reporting and financial performance reviews
Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, controls and reporting
- Support finance transformation and continuous improvement initiatives
- Review existing procedures and contribute ideas to improve efficiency and accuracy
- Work collaboratively across the organisation to strengthen financial processes and reporting
About You
We're looking for a qualified accountant who combines strong technical accounting expertise with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
You'll ideally have:
- ACCA, ACA or CIMA qualification (or equivalent)
- Experience preparing monthly management accounts
- Strong statutory accounts preparation experience
- Experience managing external audits
- Strong budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis skills
- Good knowledge of VAT and financial compliance
- A track record of improving financial processes and strengthening controls
- Advanced Excel skills and confidence using finance systems
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
- The ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
