Job Purpose
The Care Assistant provides direct personal care and support to residents, ensuring their physical, emotional, and social needs are met in line with individual care plans. The role focuses on day-to-day care delivery under the guidance and supervision of Senior Carers and management.
This is a non-supervisory role and does not include shift leadership, staff management, or independent operational responsibility.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Personal Care & Support
- Assist residents with personal hygiene, dressing, bathing, continence care, and toileting.
- Support residents with mobility, transfers, and use of mobility aids, following safe moving and handling practices.
- Assist residents with meals, hydration, and nutritional needs, including feeding support where required.
- Promote residents’ dignity, privacy, choice, and independence at all times.
- Supports and enables service users with personal care, including dressing, undressing, washing, bathing, and using the toilet, while promoting dignity and independence.
- Assists with mealtimes, including serving food and drinks at the table or in bed, and provides support with feeding when required.
- Promotes service users’ overall comfort, wellbeing, and quality of life.
- Plans and facilitates activities and interests to engage and stimulate service users.
- Provides support with daily living tasks, such as letter writing, bill payments, and accessing benefits.
- Undertakes light domestic duties, including meal preparation, cleaning, and maintaining a safe and hygienic environment. (Light domestic duties involve routine, everyday tasks that help maintain a clean, organised, and comfortable home. These include general. tidying, cleaning surfaces, laundry, and basic kitchen and bathroom upkeep.)
- Monitors and observes service users’ health and wellbeing, including recording temperature, pulse, respiration, and weight, contributing to accurate care records.
2. Emotional & Social Wellbeing
- Provide companionship and emotional support to residents.
- Encourage participation in daily routines, activities, and social engagement.
- Communicate respectfully and effectively with residents and their families.
3. Care Plans & Record Keeping
- Follow individual care plans and risk assessments as instructed.
- Record daily care notes accurately and report any changes in residents’ condition to the Senior Carer.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with data protection requirements.
4. Health, Safety & Infection Control
- Follow health and safety policies and procedures at all times.
- Adhere to infection prevention and control measures.
- Use equipment safely and report hazards, incidents, or concerns promptly.
5. Communication & Teamwork
- Work as part of the care team under the direction of Senior Carers and management.
- Attend handovers and team meetings as required.
- Escalate concerns, including safeguarding issues, immediately to a Senior Carer or Manager.
6. Training & Development
- Complete mandatory training and induction requirements.
- Participate in supervision and appraisal processes.
- Develop skills and knowledge in line with role requirements.
Safeguarding
- Act in accordance with safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Promote a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for residents.
- Report all safeguarding concerns promptly to senior staff.
Person Specification
Essential
- Caring, compassionate, and respectful approach to work.
- Ability to follow instructions, care plans, and policies.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to undertake training and development.
- Ability to work shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.
Desirable
- Experience in a care or support role.
- NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care (or willingness to work towards).
Role Limitations
- This role does not include supervising staff, leading shifts, administering medication independently (unless trained and authorised), or making operational decisions.
- All duties are carried out under the supervision of a Senior Carer or Manager.
