We are looking for a compassionate and experienced Teaching Assistant to join our specialist school supporting children and young people with profound autism. Many of our pupils are non-verbal and require tailored approaches to communication, learning, and wellbeing. This role is ideal for someone with experience using AAC, PECS, and other communication systems, as well as de-escalation strategies in a supportive, structured environment. The role also includes supporting pupils with elements of personal care as part of their daily routines.
Job Summary
The Teaching Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the educational and personal development of students with profound autism. Working closely with teachers, therapists, and families, you will help create an inclusive environment where every child can thrive. You will support students’ communication, social, and life skills while fostering a calm, positive atmosphere conducive to learning.
Duties
- Support teaching and learning for students with profound autism (ages 3–19).
- Provide individualised support to non-verbal students using AAC, PECS, and other communication aids.
- Assist with the development of personalised learning and care plans.
- Provide respectful assistance with personal care (e.g., toileting, feeding, hygiene routines).
- Implement positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies (Team Teach preferred).
- Promote independence, emotional regulation, and engagement in learning activities.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and support staff to adapt lessons and resources.
- Record and report on student progress, achievements, and challenges.
Skills & Experience
- Experience supporting students with profound autism is essential.
- Confidence working with non-verbal students and supporting alternative communication methods (AAC, PECS, Makaton desirable).
- Understanding of sensory processing needs and structured teaching approaches.
- Experience with behaviour management and de-escalation techniques (Team Teach training preferred).
- Experience providing personal care support in an educational or care setting.
- Strong communication skills with students, colleagues, and families.
- Patience, empathy, and resilience when supporting children with complex needs.
Essential Criteria
- Previous experience working with children in a school or childcare setting.
- A current DBS on the Update Service.
- EWC registration (or willingness to obtain).
- Team Teach training (preferred).
- Strong teamwork and adaptability in a dynamic classroom environment.
