Role Purpose:
This is a highly rewarding role that offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference to people’s lives. The Specialist Stop Smoking Practitioner will support the delivery of evidence-based stop smoking services aimed at reducing health inequalities across the borough of Sefton. The role will include delivering stop smoking and tobacco dependence interventions throughout multiple venues across Sefton including Community centres, GP practices and workplaces. The postholder must be able to work flexibly, independently, and collaboratively as part of a team and be willing to work one evening per week to meet the needs of the service.
Part of this role will also involve occasional work with hospital settings. This will include reviewing and updating referral pathways to make sure patients are referred to the service promptly when they are discharged from hospital.
Training will be given to ensure staff / applicants are equipped to deliver effective services.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
As a Stop Smoking Advisor, you will work collaboratively with partner organisations, healthcare professionals, and community services to promote the service, increase referrals, and embed smoking cessation support as part of routine client and patient care. You will motivate and empower individuals to make positive behavioural changes, providing evidence-based smoking cessation interventions through one-to-one appointments, group sessions, drop-ins, telephone support, and online consultations in line with the NCSCT Standard Treatment Programme. The role involves delivering education on smoking cessation, nicotine addiction, and behaviour change, supporting clients to set realistic and sustainable goals, and facilitating peer support groups to help prevent relapse. You will contribute to understanding local health needs by interpreting service and health inequalities data, helping to shape service delivery and meet community needs. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date client records in accordance with organisational policies will be essential, alongside providing a high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective service across a variety of community settings. Reporting to the Head of Service, you will be a motivated, organised, and proactive individual with experience in smoking cessation or addiction support, capable of managing competing priorities and using your judgement to respond effectively to the evolving demands of a developing service.
Skills and Competencies Required
- Be an experienced Specialist Stop Smoking Practitioner within the community. (Training will be given)
- Experience of working with, evolving and developing services
- Positive and proactive outlook with the ability to motivate, engage and support others to achieve the highest standards and outcomes.
- Adept in communication; A strong communicator who adapts the message to fit the needs of the audience including clients, staff, and volunteers at all levels.
- Build strong relationships, foster trust and co-operation among colleagues, stakeholders throughout community settings.
- Quality driven; you naturally seek high standards and actively seek to improve them.
- Value and remain open to new ideas and perspectives.
- Due to the nature of this role and potential for regular travel across the Borough, we require applicants to have a driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes.
