Key Responsibilities
- Based at Rookes Lane Depot, primarily a field-based role but also with some office and administrative elements.
- In the absence of the Parks and Open Spaces Manager, to deputise for them, and to be the main point of contact for the depot.
- Working as directed by, and in collaboration with the Parks and Open Spaces Manager to ensure the smooth running and effective operation of the Parks and Open Spaces Department. This includes the Council’s sports fields, open spaces, amenity land, allotments, parks, gardens, play areas and woodland.
- Supervision of day- to- day operations and issues and supervision of staff, currently a team of Grounds Maintenance Operatives and Gardeners.
- Ensuring effective resource allocation and task time working, for both equipment and manpower.
Position within the organisation
- The post holder reports to the Parks and Open Spaces Manager.
- You are not expected to write risk assessments or standard operating procedures (SOPs), but you are expected to read and understand them, and to ensure that your team effectively follows these correct procedures. Where problems in SOPs are identified, work in collaboration with the Parks and Open Spaces manager to find an effective solution.
Main duties
- To be the main point of contact for the Depot, in the absence of the Parks and Open Spaces Manager, providing effective deputization in their absence.
- To support in the development and implementation of work schedules.
- To assist in the delivery of morning briefings to your team, to conduct toolbox talks where appropriate, and to ensure that team training is delivered effectively.
- To ensure effective administration and organisational duties, to include liaison with other Council staff, outside contractors, and partner agencies.
- To always work within the Council’s health and safety policy, considering all risk assessment recommendations. To ensure that all reasonably practicable steps are taken to allow wider depot team members to do the same. To identify and address issues where this is not happening.
- To provide an excellent example to your team with regard to time keeping, tardiness and attendance, and to address any issues within the team relating to the same.
- To be a first point of contact for the members of your team for key issues contained within the staff handbook, including but not limited to absence policy, holiday and rota creation, staff grievance procedures, etc. You will be required to assess holiday and rota changes keeping in mind operational requirements.
- To support at all civic functions and Council run events. To be a key member of the operations team at these events.
- To assist, and work in collaboration with the Facilities Manager (who is office based) when required.
This is a substantially hands on (working supervisory) role. In addition to the above administrative duties, the following is expected as a part of the ‘working supervisor’ role.
- Work alongside other members of the team outside carrying out green spaces work on sports fields, gardens, and amenity land for a substantial amount of your working time. Therefore: the ability to work with/use the following is required:
- Use of tractors and tractor mounted implements.
- Use of ride on mowers and compact tractors.
- Use of hand and power tools to include pedestrian mowers, strimmers, brush clearers, hedge cutters.
- Use of pesticides in accordance with council policy, risk assessment, and legal requirements.
- To undertake any training necessary
- To undertake any other duties commensurate with requirements of the post
