Job Description
Our purpose is to bring together people, energy and markets to power and navigate a changing world. In a time of constant change and opportunity, we are looking for dedicated individuals who can help us pursue commercial growth through insight, expertise, and innovation. We are committed to delivering sustainable outcomes, advancing digital solutions, and strengthening collaboration across our business and beyond—and you could be part of that journey.
About the job:
At Castrol, part of bp’s Customer & Products business, we’re advancing the future of mobility through electrification. Our Advanced Electrification Testing (AET) team sits within Applied Sciences and plays a critical role in testing, engineering support and technical insight for our research and product development teams. With significant investment underway, our Pangbourne Technology Centre is evolving into a centre of excellence for electric mobility and data centre technologies. This includes a new battery testing facility and an advanced data centre testing capability.
We are looking for an Expert Engineer to join this specialist team and take a leading role in delivering complex testing programmes and advancing our technical capability.
What you’ll be doing:
You’ll be responsible for delivering high-impact testing and engineering work, spanning both established and emerging technologies.
Your work will include:
Leading research and development testing projects, from planning through execution to reporting
Developing and applying robust experimental methods (DoE) and advanced analytical techniques
Designing and improving test setups, equipment and validation strategies
Providing technical leadership and oversight across multiple testing programmes
Coaching and mentoring early career engineers and junior colleagues
Supporting safe operations by reviewing risk assessments, permits and test outputs
Representing AET and Castrol with internal and external stakeholders
This is a hands-on, operational role, working directly with testing equipment, prototypes and safety-critical systems rather than purely desk-based engineering.
What we’re looking for:
We’re looking for someone who combines deep technical expertise with practical, real-world testing experience.
You’ll bring:
A degree in engineering (essential); postgraduate qualification (MSc/PhD) is beneficial
Proven experience in engineering roles, including significant time in testing environments
Significant experience in a professional testing environment and safety-critical operations
Proven capability in physical testing, measurement, validation and data analysis
Experience working with prototype systems or advanced electrical/mechanical equipment
The confidence to work independently and lead technically at a high level
You’ll stand out if you also have:
Industry recognition (e.g. publications, conferences, chartership)
Experience in automotive, motorsport, electrification or data centre technologies
Exposure to battery systems or advanced electrical testing environments
Importantly, this role requires a genuine specialism in testing. Experience focused purely on design, modelling or system validation without hands‑on testing will not be sufficient for success in this role.
Travel Requirement
Negligible travel should be expected with this role

This role is not eligible for relocation
Remote Type:
This position is not available for remote working
