The postholder will be employed by MACANI LLC.
Maudsley Health, in conjunction with MACANI LLC, is excited to recruit a Consultant Psychiatrist to provide consultant-level psychiatric care to adult patients admitted to the inpatient eating disorders unit at the new Maudsley Health Hospital in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
This includes the assessment, diagnosis, and management of complex eating disorders and associated psychiatric and medical comorbidities.
The Consultant Psychiatrist will play a central role within the multidisciplinary team (MDT), ensuring high standards of patient care, clinical governance, and service development in line with evidence-based practice.
The post holder will be expected to deliver effective, highly specialist assessments and treatments in accordance with UK and UAE guidance of professional regulatory bodies in conjunction with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
In addition to providing direct clinical care, the role will include developing and delivering clinical, research and training services/programmes in accordance with clinical governance and relevant national and international policies.
The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively and cross cover for other consultant psychiatrists.

Maudsley Health is the brand name for the collaboration between South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and MACANI, the local partner. It was formed in 2015 to support the development of high-quality mental health services within the Middle East. Ambitious development plans are being progressed and the service is growing geographically and clinically in a planned way.
Maudsley Health began by providing child and adolescent mental health services in Abu Dhabi in 2015 and then Adult Mental Health Services in 2017. In 2018 the service successfully bid for a contract to work with the then Ministry of Health and Prevention (now Emirates Health Services) to support the development of Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital in Dubai.
The aim of Maudsley Health in the UAE is to deliver high quality mental health services, including advice, training and consultation across the range of mental health problems. This requires working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary colleagues, other professionals, families and patients. The service aims to provide a supportive environment using evidence-based approaches and will offer training and development to professionals. The post holder will be expected to take a role in the further development of Maudsley Health in the UAE.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
§ Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with eating disorders, including:
§ Anorexia Nervosa
§ Bulimia Nervosa
§ Binge Eating Disorder
§ ARFID and other specified feeding/eating disorders
§ Lead the development and implementation of individualized care plans.
§ Conduct regular ward reviews, risk assessments, and capacity assessments.
§ Manage complex comorbid psychiatric conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety, personality disorders).
§ Oversee safe refeeding protocols in collaboration with medical and dietetic teams.
§ Provide clinical leadership during psychiatric emergencies.
§ Ensure appropriate use of the Mental Health Act (or relevant local legislation).
Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Working
§ Lead and participate in MDT meetings including psychologists, dietitians, nurses, occupational therapists, and social workers.
§ Support a collaborative and recovery-oriented care approach.
§ Provide expert advice and consultation to other professionals and external services.
Leadership & Service Development
§ Contribute to the strategic development of the eating disorders service.
§ Lead on clinical governance, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
§ Develop and review clinical protocols and care pathways.
§ Support service expansion, innovation, and accreditation standards where applicable.
Teaching, Training & Supervision
§ Provide supervision to junior doctors, trainees, and other healthcare professionals.
§ Contribute to teaching programmes for medical students and multidisciplinary staff.
§ Support continuing professional development (CPD) within the team.
Research & Audit
§ Participate in clinical audit and service evaluation.
§ Contribute to research initiatives where appropriate.
§ Ensure practice is aligned with current evidence and national/international guidelines (e.g., NICE).
Administrative Responsibilities
§ Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
§ Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and organisational requirements.
§ Participate in on-call rota.
Other Elements of the Role Are to:
§ Ensure that electronic patients clinical records relating to post holders work are well maintained and meet standards for documentation and communication with referrers and users are met.
§ Promote good links with partner agencies including services across the UAE. .
§ Contribute to the development of policies and procedures to support good practice and ensure that appropriate high-quality and safe clinical services are delivered.
§ Provide a service that promotes diversity; meets the needs of service users from diverse ethnic, cultural and religious traditions, accessible and sensitive to needs relating to disability, gender and sexual orientation.
§ With the Service Manager, collect activity information as requested to meet the demands of performance management and service planning.
§ Help maintain a clinical database and keep all other records and statistics as necessary and required.
§ Participate in meetings and other management meetings as appropriate to the post holders’ responsibilities
§ Apply quality standards to all work undertaken in line with Clinical Governance policies.
§ Act with integrity and honesty at all times.
§ Enhance the reputation of Maudsley Health, MACANI and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
§ Attend professional meetings as appropriate within and outside the CAG.
§ Assist in or lead, and encourage others to be active in terms of research and evaluation where required.
§ Take part in and lead audit projects when appropriate.
§ Encourage junior staff and support their efforts in undertaking audit projects
§ Adherence to the agreed job plan and PDP and appraisal procedures.
§ Maintain GMC registration, or equivalent and Licence to Practice with the Department of Health.
§ Maintain good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent, in respect of CPD.
§ Maintain compliance with the Mandatory Training Register requirements.
