Job Purpose
Engineering Trust Training Ltd is delivering an ambitious digital strategy and roadmap to develop a fully integrated suite of applications and systems that support all aspects of daily operations. This includes modernising workflows, improving data accuracy, automating processes, and ensuring seamless digital connectivity across apprentice management, employer engagement, training delivery, compliance, and internal administration.
As a Systems Engineer and Administration Apprentice, you will play a key role in supporting this strategy. Working under the guidance of the Director of Operations, you will assist with the development, administration, and day‑to‑day running of the organisation’s digital ecosystem — including FileMaker, web‑based systems, servers, and cloud platforms.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys technology, problem‑solving, and supporting users. You will gain hands‑on experience across application development, system administration, database management, user support, and operational process improvement.
Apprenticeship Overview
Expected duration: 18 months
Apprenticeship level: Level 4 (Advanced)
Programme: DevOps Engineer
During this apprenticeship, you will follow a fully supported training programme with LearnTech, delivered through combined weekly remote classroom-based training, workplace assessment/training and online learning working towards completing the DevOps Engineer Apprenticeship standard.

Key responsibilities:
Application & Database Development
- Assist in designing, developing, and maintaining applications built in FileMaker and other web‑based operational tools.
- Support database development and administration, including data structures, layouts, scripting, automation, and integrations.
- Work with operational staff to gather requirements and translate them into system improvements or new features.
- Perform routine data checks, system backups, updates, and housekeeping to maintain reliability across FileMaker and cloud platforms.
Systems Administration (Day‑to‑Day Duties)
- Carry out daily system administration tasks across internal servers, cloud systems, and operational platforms.
- Monitor system performance, user access, storage, and data integrity.
- Assist with system updates, patching, configuration, and scheduled maintenance.
- Maintain accurate system documentation, asset records, setup guides, and change logs.
User Support & Service Requests
- Act as a first point of contact for user queries and support requests across the organisation.
- Provide support for issues related to:
o FileMaker systems
o Web‑based applications
o Cloud platforms such as Microsoft 365
o Hardware, software, and connectivity
- Diagnose and resolve issues wherever possible; escalate complex problems to the Director of Operations.
- Ensure all support interactions are logged, tracked, and followed up appropriately.
- Communicate technical information clearly and supportively, based on the needs of the user.
Operational Process Improvement
- Support the organisation’s digital roadmap by assisting in the development of integrated workflows and automated processes.
- Use tools such as Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and Lucid to help streamline and digitise operational tasks.
- Produce user guides, training materials, and documentation to help staff use systems effectively.
Project Support
- Assist with system upgrades, feature rollouts, integrations, and wider digital improvement projects.
- Participate in user testing, gathering feedback, and documenting changes.
- Help implement system enhancements aligned with the organisation’s long‑term digital strategy.
Essential skills, characteristics and experience
- Strong interest in systems engineering, IT administration, application development, or cloud technologies.
- Good communication skills and willingness to support users at all levels of technical ability.
- Logical thinking and problem‑solving ability.
- Attention to detail and strong organisation skills.
- Proactive attitude and willingness to learn new technologies.
- Commitment to completing all apprenticeship training and assessments.
Desirable Experience (Not Essential)
- Exposure to tools such as:
o FileMaker or other database platforms
o Microsoft 365, Cloud and Server based solutions
o Web development tools or technologies
o Scripting or coding (SQL, Python, JavaScript, etc.)
- Experience providing informal IT support at school, college, work, or in personal projects.
Requirements
It is a requirement to have five GCSE 9-4 grades or equivalent (including English and Maths) to apply for this type of apprenticeship. If you do not have these grades but have completed numeracy and literacy Key Skills/Functional Skills at level two you may also apply for these apprenticeships.
