We’re looking for a Project Officer to help develop and deliver the advisory and support services function within Nature Towns and Cities.
Nature Towns and Cities works with local councils, their public and private sector partners, third sector and community organisations, funders and investors to put nature and access to green and blue space at the heart of urban places and communities – creating more resilient, healthier, thriving towns and cities across the UK. The role will also help integration and knowledge sharing within the National Trust and align with our other place-based urban programmes and initiatives where beneficial.

You’ll work across the National Trust and our partners in a collaborative, innovative and dynamic environment that values learning, sharing and new ideas. Over the next decade, we aim to improve access to quality green space for 5 million people and enable 1 million more children and young people to be active outdoors. Your work will play an important role in helping achieve these goals and contribute to lasting systemic change.
Your contractual location will be either Manchester, Swindon, Birmingham or London. And you’ll be required to work at a National Trust or partner office for 40-60% of your working week. The role will require some travel across the UK for partner meetings, stakeholder engagement, team days and collaborative activities. You will be line managed by the Deputy Programme Director for Nature Towns and Cities.
What you'll be doing:You’ll help colleagues and partners to understand and respond to the support needs of the approximately 50 UK towns and cities and 200 community organisations that are part of Nature Towns and Cities.
A people person, you’ll make connections and build relationships with the people leading change in cities and towns across the UK. You’ll help deliver the be the first point of contact for places and people seeking support and by managing the day-to-day communications between the programme and those seeking and providing support.
You’ll help to deploy experts and advisers from within NT, our partner organisations and our pool of trusted external consultants to help places and communities embed nature into the urban fabric and empower people take action for nature close to home.
You will enable effective sharing across the programme and NT by joining dots and connecting places working on common problems. .
You’ll lean on your project experience to make sure our support, training and learning offer is well planned and delivered and that accurate records of what was provided are maintained. You will also collect and analyse feedback and play your part in reviewing and improving the service. You will also take the lead on monitoring budgets and maintaining accurate timelines.
This role is hosted by the National Trust and works across the Nature Towns and Cities Coalition. It’s fixed term until February 2029. As this is a partnership role, we will be sharing your application with partners for assessment.

Who we're looking forWe welcome applications from people with a wide range of experience. We’re particularly interested in hearing from applicants who can build strong relationships with partners; undertake service design and lead multi-disciplinary teams.
You’ll bring:
- Proven experience of managing small projects ~25k
- Interest in at 2 of the 7 topics urban nature, green infrastructure, urbanism, climate resilience, health, community or other related field
- Knowledge of local government and the urban operating environment
- Knowledge of partnership development and delivery
- A creative, collaborative and entrepreneurial approach to problem solving
- Strong communication skills
- Experience of managing budgets and timelines.
