SEMH Intervention Teaching Assistant Opportunity:
Full-Time
Term 6 Start – Potential to Continue into the Next Academic Year
Gloucester, Gloucestershire
Intervention, 1:1 and Small Group Support
UK-based experience working with children is essential
A welcoming and well-regarded Primary school in Gloucester is seeking a confident and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team from Term 6 on a full-time basis, with the potential for the role to continue into the next academic year.
This is a rewarding opportunity to support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs through a mixture of intervention work, 1:1 support, and small group sessions. The school is looking for somebody who can build positive relationships, remain calm under pressure, and help pupils re-engage with learning in a safe and supportive environment.
Many of the pupils you will support may have experienced disrupted education, challenges with emotional regulation, or difficulties engaging within mainstream classroom settings. Your role will involve helping pupils develop trust, confidence, and strategies to better manage behaviour and access learning successfully.
You will be working closely with class teachers, the SENDCo, safeguarding staff, and pastoral leads to create consistency, structure, and positive routines for the children you support.
This role may involve:
- Delivering targeted SEMH interventions
- Supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis and within small groups
- Encouraging positive behaviour and emotional regulation
- Supporting reintegration back into the classroom environment
- Using de-escalation techniques and restorative approaches
- Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils
- Supporting pupils to remain engaged and motivated in their learning
Requirements:
- Flexible and adaptable approach
- Strong understanding of SEND and SEMH needs
- Positive, resilient, and passionate about supporting young people
- Strong communication and behaviour management skills
- Committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment
- UK-based experience working with children is essential
This role is not always easy — there will be challenging moments and difficult days. However, there will also be incredibly rewarding breakthroughs. The moments where a pupil begins to trust again, engages in learning, or successfully manages a full day in class are what make this role so worthwhile.
Your compassion, empathy, patience, and consistency will be your biggest strengths within this role. We are looking for somebody who sees potential where others may see challenge and who is genuinely passionate about helping young people thrive.
