An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated SEN Teacher to join the Post-16 team, teaching a life-skills-focused curriculum within a Further Education setting. The role is ideal for someone who is passionate about equipping learners with practical skills that support greater independence in everyday life, education, employment, and the community.
Learners may present with autism, moderate to severe learning difficulties, communication needs, and complex learning profiles. Teaching groups are small, well-supported, and centred on individualised learning pathways.
The Role
The SEN Teacher will take responsibility for planning and delivering engaging, purposeful learning experiences that promote independence and functional skill development. Lessons will be highly practical and may take place both in the classroom and within real-world community settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver a creative and accessible life-skills curriculum tailored to individual learner needs
- Plan learning around independence, communication, personal development, and employability skills
- Teach functional skills such as cooking, budgeting, travel training, personal care, and community access
- Develop and review EHCPs and contribute to EHCP outcomes
- Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, therapists, and families to support holistic learner development
- Track, assess, and report on progress in line with individual targets
- Promote safeguarding, wellbeing, and positive behaviour support across all aspects of learning
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate is likely to be:
- A qualified teacher (QTS or equivalent SEN / teaching qualification desirable)
- Experienced in working with learners with SEND in a specialist or post-16 setting
- Confident delivering practical, life-skills-based learning
- Passionate about supporting independence and improving long-term outcomes for young people
- Skilled in behaviour support strategies and adapting teaching approaches
- A reflective, resilient, and collaborative practitioner
Desirable Experience
- Working with learners with autism, PMLD, SLD, or complex needs
- Delivering ASDAN, vocational learning, or independence-focused programmes
- Experience in Further Education or post-16 SEN provision
- Strong understanding of EHCP planning and outcomes-based teaching
