The Opportunity
We are looking for an ambitious and commercially driven Assistant Branch Sales Manager to help lead our Tunbridge Wells branch. Working closely with the Branch Manager, Area Sales Manager and wider leadership team, you will play a key role in driving sales growth, developing customer relationships and supporting the operational performance of the branch.
This is a hands-on leadership role combining sales, customer service, team development and branch operations. You'll be a proactive sales professional who thrives on building relationships, creating opportunities and leading by example, while helping ensure the branch operates efficiently and delivers exceptional service to our customers.

What You'll Do
Sales & Business Development
- Proactively drive outbound sales activity through customer calls, account management and face-to-face visits to existing and prospective customers.
- Support the Branch Manager in delivering and exceeding branch sales targets.
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities, including new customers, product ranges and market opportunities.
- Work closely with the Area Sales Manager to maximise opportunities from quotations, take-offs and customer enquiries.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with local contractors, tradespeople and trade accounts.
- Contact lapsed or at-risk customers to strengthen relationships, recover business and resolve concerns.
- Promote the full range of products and services available across PBSL Group.
- Support branch sales reporting and help monitor performance against key targets and objectives.
Branch Leadership & Customer Service
- Support the Branch Manager in leading, motivating and developing the branch team.
- Help create a positive, high-performance culture focused on sales growth and excellent customer service.
- Lead by example in delivering outstanding customer experiences at every stage of the customer journey.
- Assist with coaching and developing team members to maximise individual and branch performance.
- Support the resolution of customer complaints and service issues in a professional and timely manner.
- Help ensure team members are trained, informed and equipped to carry out their roles effectively.
Branch Operations & Compliance
- Support the Branch Manager in the day-to-day running of the branch, ensuring all operational activities are carried out efficiently and in line with company procedures.
- Assist with managing stock control, stock accuracy and replenishment, helping to ensure product availability while minimising excess stock.
- Monitor and maintain high standards of housekeeping, branch presentation and health & safety compliance.
- Support the management of goods-in, goods-out and delivery processes, ensuring operational efficiency and accuracy.
- Assist with staff scheduling, holiday planning and resource allocation to ensure appropriate branch cover at all times.
- Help monitor branch costs and identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and profitability.
- Ensure company policies, procedures and compliance requirements are followed by all team members.
- Support the onboarding, training and development of branch colleagues, helping to maintain a knowledgeable and capable team.
- Produce and maintain accurate branch records, reports and documentation as required.
- Act as deputy for the Branch Manager during periods of absence, taking responsibility for branch operations, customer service and team management.
- Work collaboratively with Procurement, Finance, Transport and other Group departments to support the effective operation of the branch and wider business.
- Assist in investigating and resolving operational issues, customer concerns and service challenges in a timely and professional manner.

- Proven sales experience, ideally within the building materials, construction or merchanting sector.
- Confidence in developing new business opportunities and building long-term customer relationships.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with both customers and colleagues.

- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

- Experience within the building materials industry, with a good understanding of products and trade customers.

Hours
Average 44.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday (between 7:00am – 5:00pm) plus alternate Saturdays (8:00am – 12:00pm). Occasional additional hours may be required to meet business needs.
