Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Credit Controller for a fixed-term contract of six months for a client in Gloucester. The successful candidate will play a vital role in managing the organisation’s credit control processes, ensuring timely collection of outstanding debts, and maintaining positive client relationships. Duties
- Review and validate aged debt to ensure accuracy and legitimacy of outstanding balances.
- Take a structured approach to debt collection, prioritising higher-risk and overdue accounts.
- Monitor debtor accounts and identify trends or recurring issues impacting payment.
- Proactively contact students, sponsors, and external organisations to secure payment of outstanding balances, using a professional and supportive approach.
- Use a range of communication methods (email, phone, formal letters) in line with policies.
- Negotiate payment plans where appropriate, ensuring they are realistic and adhered to.
- Investigate and resolve queries or disputes relating to outstanding invoices in a timely manner.
- Work closely with internal departments to understand the origin of debts and resolve discrepancies.
- Ensure all actions and outcomes are accurately recorded.
- Build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders to improve debt recovery outcomes.
- Liaise with third-party collection agencies, preparing and passing suitable cases in line with University procedures.
- Act as a key point of contact for aged debt-related queries across the institution. Reporting & Analysis
- Produce weekly aged debt reports and progress updates for the Senior Finance Team and other stakeholders, as required.
- Provide insight into collection performance, risks, and recovery forecasts.
- Highlight problem areas and recommend process improvements, where appropriate. Write-offs & Escalation
- Assess aged debt and recommend write-off actions where recovery is no longer viable, supported by clear rationale.
- Ensure all write-offs comply with financial regulations and approval processes.
- Escalate complex, sensitive, or high-value cases appropriately.
Skills
- Proven experience in accounts payable or credit control roles within financial services or similar sectors.
- Strong analysis skills with the ability to interpret financial data accurately.
- Proficiency in accounting software and data entry systems.
- Excellent phone etiquette and communication skills, capable of handling challenging conversations professionally.
- Good organisational skills with attention to detail to ensure accuracy in record keeping.
- Experience with telemarketing techniques for debt collection is desirable but not essential.
