Check in and Chat Telephone Befriending volunteering. As people get older, some may find they spend more time on their own. This can sometimes feel lonely, boring and lacking in social interaction.
As a Check in and Chat – Telephone Befriending - volunteer you can make a difference to the wellbeing of an older person's life.
Our volunteer Check in and Chat Telephone Befriending service is for older people so they can enjoy chatting with someone over the phone, all from the comfort of their home with a weekly 30-minute chat (conversation length can vary) at a time which suits both volunteer and older person. You will be matched with a person who has similar interests to you.
Hours: usually 30 minutes a week at your convenience at an agreed time with your elderly telephone friend.

');What will you be doing?
Calling an older person for around 30 minutes per week for a friendly chat and to listen to their stories of their lives and talk about shared interests so you will be both listening and chatting.
How would you be supported in this role?
You are supported by members of our staff in our Wellbeing and Volunteering Team with our Coordinators and Manager.
Why do we need volunteers in this role?
We need volunteers call our many older people throughout Surrey who may be lonely and isolated and this will help them feel socially connected.

We will register you for a DBS (standard practice for new staff and volunteers) at no cost to you with our online provider.*
All volunteers need to be age 18 or over.

What skills, interests or experience might be helpful in this role?
- You are kind and respectful to older people.
- A commitment to volunteering with us for a minimum of 3-6 months is ideal.
- You are reliable with making your calls to your agreed schedule around your work and other commitments.
- You enjoy a good phone call and have patience, empathy and understanding of older people.
- Are respectful and aware some older people have mild dementia / forgetfulness.
- You have excellent listening skills.
- You care about older people.
- You are patient and tolerant and respect others’ opinions and beliefs that are different to your own.
- You want to support and perhaps improve confidence of older people.
