At National Highways we are very proud of the diverse habitats and associated species within our soft estates. Our linear habitats along the road network help integrate the Strategic Road Network into the landscape and provide invaluable habitat corridors for a range of protected species. At National Highways, as the custodian of these important habitats, we are passionate about the management of these areas and we are looking for arboriculturists who will work within our Environment Teams to help to support the safe running of our road networks while maintaining these assets.
Please note that you will be required to drive as part of your role, and you will need to have no more than 3 points to be considered for this position and during employment.
- Undertake inspections of tree stock and associated environmental assets in line with defined inspection regimes, arboricultural best practice and statutory requirements (e.g. highways safety inspections, duty of care).
- Identify and assess arboricultural and wider environmental needs to inform the development of maintenance solutions including tree risk and woodland management in accordance with agreed methodologies and prioritisation criteria.
- Analyse environmental and arboricultural data to support the development of future renewal, planting and improvement projects including the preparation of technical reports, evidence and value management options.
- Monitor the delivery of tree works and environmental improvement schemes, working closely with contractors and internal teams to ensure compliance, quality and timely resolution of issues.
Maintain accurate records of tree inventory, condition assessments (including defect trees) and works history within relevant asset management systems, ensuring data is captured in line with organisational standards and deadlines.

About You
- Inspectors must be qualified to a minimum of the LANTRA PTI certificate or Level 4 Technicians Certificate in Arboriculture or equivalent.
- Demonstrable experience in arboriculture and habitat management, including tree inspection and protected species considerations.
- Sound understanding of the impact of arboricultural practices and tree health including knowledge of disease management e.g. Ash Dieback, Dutch Elm Disease.
- Experience in conducting inspections and producing reports in accordance with BS 5837.
- Knowledge of asset condition assessment techniques particularly in relation to tree condition surveys, tree risk management systems and landscape/ecology assessments.
Working knowledge of relevant environmental and arboricultural legislation, standards and their application within a highways setting.
