Deputy Manager – Residential Children's Home (Theophelian)

£40,000 per annum- Participation in the on-call rota is included within the salary.

28 days annual leave inclusive of Bank Holidays.
Bank Holiday on-call responsibilities will be shared between the Deputy Manager and Registered Manager to ensure appropriate management support is available across the residential children's homes throughout the year.

Senior Residential Support Workers, Residential Support Workers, Bank Staff and Agency Staff (when on shift).
Job Purpose
The Deputy Manager will play a key leadership role within Theophelian, supporting the Registered Manager in the effective management, development and delivery of high-quality care within the residential children's home.
The post holder will support the Registered Manager to ensure children and young people receive safe, nurturing, consistent and child-centred care that promotes positive outcomes, emotional wellbeing, independence and stability.
The Deputy Manager will provide leadership and guidance to the staff team, support regulatory compliance, maintain high standards of practice, oversee care planning, complete quality assurance activities and ensure safeguarding responsibilities are managed effectively.
The Deputy Manager will act as the lead manager in the absence of the Registered Manager and will provide operational oversight of the home during periods of annual leave, sickness or other absence, with support from the Responsible Individual (RI).
The role requires a confident and organised leader who can provide effective management support, promote a positive team culture and ensure the home continues to operate safely and effectively.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Management
- Support the Registered Manager with the day-to-day running and leadership of the residential children's home.
- Maintain high standards of care in line with the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015, Quality Standards and Theophelian policies and procedures.
- Support the Registered Manager with operational decisions, planning and service development.
- Provide leadership, guidance and support to the staff team.
- Promote a culture of accountability, professionalism and continuous improvement.
- Ensure children and young people remain at the centre of all decisions.
- Oversee the home and provide management support when the Registered Manager is unavailable.
- Provide oversight of the home when the Registered Manager is on annual leave, with support from the Responsible Individual (RI).
Registered Manager Absence and Annual Leave Cover
When the Registered Manager is on annual leave, the Deputy Manager will:
- Take responsibility for the operational oversight of the residential children's home.
- Provide leadership and support to the staff team.
- Act as a management point of contact for staff and professionals.
- Attend meetings and represent Theophelian where required.
- Ensure safeguarding concerns, incidents and significant events are managed appropriately.
- Maintain communication with the Responsible Individual (RI).
- Provide on-call cover during periods when the Registered Manager is on annual leave.
- Ensure continuity of leadership and management support across the service.
- Notify the Responsible Individual of any significant events requiring escalation.
- Ensure notifications to Ofsted and placing authorities are completed in accordance with regulations.
Staff Supervision, Appraisals and Development
- Complete regular staff supervisions in line with organisational expectations.
- Complete annual staff appraisals and support professional development.
- Identify training needs and encourage ongoing learning.
- Provide coaching and guidance to staff.
- Support performance management processes where required.
- Promote reflective practice and continuous improvement.
Team Meetings and Communication
- Lead and chair team meetings.
- Ensure effective communication across the staff team.
- Share updates regarding policies, procedures, safeguarding and service expectations.
- Monitor actions from meetings and ensure they are completed.
- Promote a positive and supportive team environment.
Care Planning and Children's Outcomes
- Oversee and update care plans, placement plans, risk assessments and other relevant documentation.
- Ensure plans reflect children's needs, wishes and goals.
- Monitor children's progress and outcomes.
- Promote child-centred, trauma-informed and therapeutic approaches.
- Ensure children and young people are involved in decisions about their care.
Safeguarding
- Promote a strong safeguarding culture within the home.
- Ensure safeguarding concerns are responded to appropriately.
- Support safeguarding investigations and professional meetings.
- Work alongside social workers, local authorities and external agencies.
- Ensure staff understand and follow safeguarding procedures.
Quality Assurance and Compliance
- Complete audits, checks and quality assurance activities.
- Complete approvals required within the home.
- Ensure records and documentation are accurate and compliant.
- Support preparation for Ofsted inspections.
- Monitor standards of care and identify areas for improvement.
- Support the Registered Manager with continuous improvement plans.
- Complete monthly audits and monitor actions arising from audits.
- Support Regulation 45 reviews and service development plans.
- Ensure actions from Regulation 44 reports are completed.
Safer Recruitment
- Support safer recruitment processes.
- Participate in interviews and selection processes.
- Ensure recruitment checks and documentation are completed appropriately.
- Support staff induction and probation processes.
- Participate in disciplinary, grievance and capability meetings where appropriate.
- Support probation reviews and return to work processes.
On-Call Responsibilities
- Participate in the management on-call rota every other weekend.
- Provide management support and guidance to staff outside normal working hours.
- Respond to safeguarding concerns, incidents and emergencies.
- Escalate concerns appropriately.
- Receive support from the Registered Manager when required during on-call periods.
- Provide on-call cover when the Registered Manager is on annual leave.
- Share Bank Holiday on-call responsibilities with the Registered Manager.
Person Specification
Essential
- Experience working within residential children's services.
- Experience in a senior or supervisory role.
- Knowledge of safeguarding and children's home regulations.
- Experience completing supervisions and appraisals.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to support the management of a residential children's home.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Experience of leading shifts and supervising staff.
- Ability to produce clear written reports and records.
- Ability to work flexibly and participate in management on call arrangements.
- Good IT skills and experience of electronic recording systems.
Desirable
- Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or equivalent).
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare or willingness to work towards.
- Experience supporting Ofsted inspections.
