Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our culinary team as a part-time Supper Cook and Catering Assistant. The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in food preparation and a strong understanding of kitchen operations. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop culinary skills within a professional environment, contributing to the creation of high-quality meals for our residents. The position will be contracted for 32 hours per week, with the opportunity to pick up extra shifts as required by the kitchen team. The job is suitable for those eager to gain hands-on experience in the food service industry. The Supper Chef is required to take charge of the kitchen after 3pm, prepare meals for residents, and direct the work of the kitchen assistants to ensure that residents receive their evening meal on time. On other occasions, when the head chef is on duty, the postholder would be required to function as a catering assistant.
Duties
- On completion of in-house training, the person will be expected to prepare light meals and snacks for elderly residents in the afternoon and evenings.
- Ensure that attractive, tasty, well presented food is always supplied to residents for their evening meal.
- The Supper Cook would be expected to cover the cooking of the lunchtime meals in the absence of the day time chef.
- Under the guidance of the Catering Manager, ensure that residents who have been assessed as having swallowing difficulties are offered the correct modified diet, as per their individual care plan.
- Check each resident's diet notification sheet to ensure that any food allergy or fortification is safely accounted for.
- Collect ingredients as per the menu, and cook a variety of dishes according to established recipes and standards.
- Ensure all food is prepared safely, hygienically, and efficiently in compliance with food safety regulations.
- Assist with meal assembly and presentation to ensure visual appeal and quality standards are met at all times.
- Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the kitchen area, including washing dishes, utensils, and equipment.
- Support team members during busy periods by helping with serving, washing up, and assisting with additional food preparation tasks as required.
- Follow health and safety procedures diligently to ensure a safe working environment for all staff.
- Assist in inventory management by checking stock levels and notifying supervisors of shortages or expired items
- The ideal candidate would be a person who is available to work most Saturdays.
Skills
- Proven experience in food preparation, cooking, or kitchen environments is desirable
- Knowledge of food safety standards and best practices in hygiene
- Previous experience working in a restaurant or catering setting is advantageous
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to multitask effectively under pressure
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work well within a team
- Basic understanding of meal preparation techniques and culinary practices
- Customer service skills, particularly if involved in serving or interacting directly with guests
