About the Role
We are seeking a compassionate, proactive and highly organised Family Support Worker & Attendance Officer to join our pastoral team within a trauma-informed specialist setting supporting young people with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs.
This is a key role focused on improving attendance, strengthening family engagement, and ensuring safeguarding and wellbeing remain central to our attendance strategy. You will work closely with pupils, families, school staff, external agencies and local authorities to reduce barriers to education and promote positive outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
As Family Support Worker & Attendance Officer, you will:
- Monitor daily attendance and respond quickly to concerns and emerging patterns
- Lead early intervention strategies to reduce persistent absence
- Support young people experiencing emotionally based school avoidance, anxiety and trauma-related barriers
- Build positive, trusting relationships with families and strengthen home-school communication
- Develop and implement attendance support plans, reintegration plans, and transition plans
- Carry out attendance home visits (in line with safeguarding procedures)
- Liaise with external professionals including social care, CAMHS, Early Help and attendance services
- Attend and contribute to safeguarding and multi-agency meetings
- Maintain accurate attendance records, reports and documentation in line with GDPR expectations
- Promote a restorative, relational and solution-focused approach to attendance and family support
What We’re Looking For (Essential)
You must have:
- Experience working with children and young people with SEMH needs
- Experience supporting families and vulnerable young people
- Strong understanding of safeguarding procedures and the importance of attendance as a safeguarding issue
- Knowledge of trauma-informed and relational approaches
- Excellent communication and organisation skills
- Ability to remain calm and emotionally regulated in challenging situations
- Confidence working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Strong record keeping and professional reporting ability
- Full UK driving licence with access to a vehicle
- Right to Work Requirement: Currently, we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role. Applicants must have the existing right to work in the UK at the time of application.
Desirable Experience
It would be beneficial if you have:
- Experience in specialist, SEMH or therapeutic education settings
- Knowledge of KCSIE, Working Together and attendance legislation
- Experience with home visits, Early Help processes, or attendance interventions
- Experience contributing to EHCP reviews and multi-agency planning
- Training in trauma, attachment, restorative practice, mental health or safeguarding
- Experience using attendance monitoring systems and analysing data
