Role Summary
The Lead Detox Practitioner provides day-to-day operational leadership within the detoxification and rehabilitation unit, ensuring the safe, effective and consistent delivery of person-centred care. The post holder line manages Detox Practitioners and Rehab staff, overseeing practice standards, performance, and service delivery across all shifts.
Working closely with the Registered Manager and wider senior leadership team, the Lead Detox Practitioner is responsible for coordinating daily operations, managing rotas and staffing, maintaining compliance with CQC regulations and organisational policies, and ensuring high-quality clinical and recovery-focused practice across the service.
The role acts as a key link between frontline delivery and senior management, supporting service governance, quality assurance, and continuous improvement. The post holder will also participate in the on-call rota, providing out-of-hours operational support.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership & Service Delivery
- Oversee the day-to-day running of the detox and rehab unit, ensuring safe, structured and effective service delivery across all shifts
- Act as the senior operational lead on shift, supporting decision-making, risk management and escalation
- Coordinate daily service flow including staffing allocation, admissions, discharges, and activity planning
- Ensure a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment is consistently maintained
Line Management & Workforce Development
- Provide direct line management, supervision and support to Detox Practitioners and Rehab staff
- Deliver regular supervision, performance management and appraisal processes
- Support induction, training and competency development of staff
- Address performance, capability or conduct issues in line with organisational policy
- Promote a positive, accountable and recovery-focused team culture
Rota Management & Workforce Planning
- Develop and manage staff rotas to ensure safe staffing levels and skill mix at all times
- Monitor staffing gaps, sickness and leave, taking appropriate action to maintain service delivery
- Work with senior management to support recruitment, workforce planning and retention
Clinical Oversight & Quality Assurance
- Oversee the quality of care delivery, ensuring Detox Practitioners are effectively implementing care and recovery plans
- Provide oversight of clinical monitoring processes (e.g., CIWA, SOWS), ensuring accuracy and timely escalation of concerns
- Carry out regular audits of case notes, care plans, and documentation to ensure quality and compliance
- Support staff to manage risk, deterioration, and complex presentations appropriately
- Promote best practice, continuous improvement and evidence-based care
Governance, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with CQC regulations, organisational policies, and clinical governance frameworks
- Monitor and maintain standards in safeguarding, incident reporting, and risk management
- Oversee completion and quality of incident reports, safeguarding referrals, and investigations
- Support audits, inspections and regulatory requirements
- Ensure accurate and timely record-keeping across all systems
Health & Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety requirements, including risk assessments and environmental standards
- Monitor and address any safety concerns within the unit
- Promote infection control, safe medication practices (within scope), and harm reduction approaches
Multi-Agency Working & Communication
- Work collaboratively with clinical teams, senior leaders and external partners
- Act as a point of escalation for operational and service delivery issues
- Support effective communication across multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders
Support to Senior Leadership Team
- Provide operational support to the Registered Manager and wider leadership team
- Contribute to service development, improvement initiatives and implementation of new processes
- Assist with audits, reporting, performance data and governance requirements
- Undertake delegated responsibilities to support effective service management
On-Call Responsibilities (Includes additional annual allowance as specified)
- Participate in the on-call rota, providing out-of-hours support and operational decision-making
- Respond to incidents, staffing issues or service risks as required

Documentation, Systems & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely records across all systems, including case notes, care plans, internal communications, incident reporting, and national compliance systems.
- Ensure all documentation meets CQC standards, organisational policies, and legal and safeguarding requirements.
- Participate in audits, reporting, and ongoing data quality improvement.
Safeguarding, Incidents & Risk Management
- Identify and respond to safeguarding concerns for vulnerable adults and children, escalating appropriately in line with organisational policy and local authority procedures.
- Complete timely and accurate safeguarding referrals and alerts, and record, report, and escalate incidents, accidents, and near misses using internal systems.
- Contribute to post-incident reviews, investigations, and learning outcomes to support continuous service improvement.
- Maintain up-to-date risk assessments and risk management care plans, recognising early warning signs of deterioration, risk, or crisis and taking appropriate action to ensure safety.
