Job Overview
The Academy Mentor supports students in overcoming barriers to learning linked to social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, communication and interaction needs and academic engagement. The role promotes our core values of Respect, Resilience, Responsibility, Collaboration and Independence by building positive relationships, fostering emotional growth, increasing academic engagement and supporting targeted interventions to enable students to succeed both personally and academically. This role will be to provide this support in an on-site provision at a school in Kettering.
· Build positive, trusting and respectful relationships with students, modelling emotional regulation, positive communication and behaviour.
· Mentor students, helping them develop coping strategies, build resilience and communicate their needs effectively.
· Support students’ academic motivation, engagement and participation in learning and personal development.
· Ensure that each session being delivered is following curriculum plans and resources are prepared in advance of the session
· Deliver targeted 1:1 and small group interventions focused on improving resilience, emotional wellbeing, self-esteem, communication, collaboration and personal development.
· Monitor and assess group interventions including updating Curriculum Trackers for each student and giving verbal and written feedback to student work.
· Use computer systems daily to record participation and engagement to learning, attendance and a written progress log for each student
· Provide academic support in key areas including literacy and numeracy and curriculum catch-up when necessary.
· Encourage students to take responsibility for their learning, attendance, conduct and personal goals.
· Support re-integration plans to school, encouraging independence and positive choices.
· Monitor student progress, attendance and behaviour, contributing to personalised learning plans.
· Work collaboratively with colleagues to reinforce strategies that support emotional regulation and academic participation in class.
· To supervise students during lunch and break-times to facilitate successful interactions with peers and appropriate behaviours at social times.
· Communicate effectively with parents/carers regarding student progress, challenges and successes.
· Maintain accurate documentation in line with safeguarding, curriculum and relationship for learning policies.
· Promote inclusion and ensure all students can access learning and emotional support safely.
· Champion the Ignition Academy values and the school's values in all interactions, promoting a culture of independence, collaboration, respect, resilience and responsibility.
Safeguarding & Professional Conduct:
· Uphold safeguarding policies at all times and follow reporting procedures where concerns arise.
· Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality and accurate records.
· Participate in continuous professional development related to the needs of students and the organisation.
· Actively champion Ignition Academy’s and the school's values to foster a safe, respectful and ambitious learning environment.
Essential experience:
· Experience working with young people with SEMH needs or barriers to learning.
· Ability to motivate, support and build trust with vulnerable students.
· Understands the value of Respect, Resilience, Responsibility, Collaboration and Independence when supporting young people.
· Strong communication, empathy, behaviour management and de-escalation skills.
· Emotionally resilient, reflective and able to make consistent professional decisions.
Desirable experience:
· Training in restorative practice, trauma-informed practice or emotional coaching.
· Experience supporting learning, academic engagement or study skills.
· Experience in specialist SEMH or alternative provision settings.
· Understanding of multi-agency working and the SEND Code of Practice.
Pay: From £24,000.00 per year
