The Role
We are seeking an experienced SEN Tutor and Mentor to support a Year 9 learner with an EHCP who is currently without a school placement and awaiting longer-term educational provision.
This role combines Functional English and Maths tuition with a strong mentoring element, helping the young person rebuild confidence, develop life skills, improve emotional regulation and re-engage positively with learning.
The successful tutor will understand the impact of trauma, disrupted education and attachment difficulties, and will be able to build a trusting relationship before introducing academic demands.
About the Student
This young person:
- Is a Looked After Child with an EHCP
- Has experienced significant placement instability, trauma and disrupted education
- Has dyslexia and moderate learning difficulties
- Is currently working at approximately:
- Year 2 level in English
- Year 3 level in Maths
- Learns best through practical, hands-on activities
- Benefits from strong adult relationships, structure and encouragement
He enjoys:
- Football and sports
- Go-karting and bikes
- Outdoor activities
- Gaming
- Mechanics and problem-solving tasks
- Practical learning experiences
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver Functional English and Maths tuition
- Provide mentoring and emotional support
- Build confidence, resilience and self-esteem
- Complete baseline assessments once rapport has been established
- Deliver learning through practical and engaging activities
- Support the development of life skills and future aspirations
- Contribute to EHCP review reporting
- Liaise with carers and professionals involved in the wider support network
Essential Experience
Applicants should have experience supporting young people with:
- SEMH needs
- Trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)
- Dyslexia and literacy difficulties
- Looked After Children (LAC)
- School disengagement and exclusion histories
- Attachment difficulties
- Behavioural and emotional regulation challenges
The ideal tutor will:
- Be calm, patient and nurturing
- Understand trauma-informed practice
- Be confident balancing mentoring and academic support
- Be able to build trust with young people who have experienced instability and rejection
- Use praise, encouragement and practical learning approaches to motivate engagement
Teaching & Mentoring Approach

There is no gender preference for this role; experience and approach are the key factors.
Schedule
- 10 hours per week total
- 8 hours tuition
- 2 hours mentoring
- Days and times to be agreed directly with carers
- Preferred learning window between 10:00am and 2:00pm
- Fixed-term placement initially through to July 2026, with potential for extension
