Cogent have an exciting opportunity for an Industrial Sciences Skills Lead to develop the skills strategy for the process industries, working alongside the Head of Skills for Clean Growth and Industrial Sciences.
The role will lead on industrial science activities that take place within the Cogent Charity including growing our activity in this field, overseeing project delivery, liaising with industrial science employers, and providing intelligence and insight to the rest of the business. The postholder will support the Cogent Skills business unit leads and sector skills leads in developing & delivering our strategy, engagement forums and commercial propositions for industrial sciences, positioning Cogent as the leading organisation in the industrial skills space, and ensuring that the business units develop their propositions to benefit Cogent commercially. As the lead for this industry, this role is the expert voice for industrial sciences at Cogent, is responsible for a small number of projects delivered in conjunction with colleagues, and flies the flag for the sector, ensuring sector needs are reflected in the Charity activities.
This role is homebased with regular travel to Cogent offices, customer sites and external events

Key Accountabilities
- To be the internal ‘go to’ expert on the workforce and skills needs of the process industries
- To lead Cogent’s strategic agenda regarding industrial sciences alongside the Head of Skills for Clean Growth and Industrial Sciences.
- To support the development of the SISP, recruiting members and ensuring that the value proposition is appropriate for process industries.
- To work with trade associations across the industrial sciences sector as appropriate
- To work across Cogent’s business units to ensure that there is a focus and plan to flex and adapt their offers to respond to the needs of the Industrial Sciences Sector:
- identifying opportunities to add value to the current offer through contextualization or additional content development, through offering additional standards, or qualifications
- identifying opportunities for short course and consultancy delivery.
- identifying how to establish commercially viable employer forums for the long term and supporting standard setting and research activity.
- providing intelligence around industrial sciences
- To have developed a strategy for Cogent Skills in relation to industrial sciences
- To have identified and secured funding opportunities for Cogent Skills in order that we can develop our commercial or representative roles.
- To recruit new members to the SISP
- Well-delivered collaborative forums, with good attendance and strong outputs
- Positive relationships formed with key stakeholders
- Commercial targets on retention and new business achieved
Essential Knowledge Skills and Qualifications
- Significant experience of the Industrial Sciences Sector (petrochemicals, or similar process industries)
- Experience of representing a multi-faceted organisation in a stakeholder environment including managing conflicts of interest.
- Track record of delivering projects to time and budget.
- Previous experience of meeting and exceeding targets managing multiple customer projects.
- Management of a commercial entity and the pressures and requirements to deliver financially, reputationally and operationally.
- Understand the skills landscape, the role of technical education and educational routes into the industry.
- Commercially orientated in terms of customer focus, responsiveness, understanding value propositions.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong employer relationships and convene working partnerships.
- Gravitas, the ability to command a room using expertise and a collaborative approach.
- Strategic, with the ability to deal with high levels of ambiguity and to bring clarity through impactful problem solving.

Pay: £60,000.00-£65,000.00 per year
