Job Overview:
The Passive Fire Stopping Operative is responsible for installing fire-resistant materials to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through buildings. The operative will focus on sealing penetrations and gaps in fire-resistant walls, floors, and ceilings to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations and building codes. This role involves working closely with other trades and project managers to deliver high-quality fire safety solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Installation of Fire Stopping Systems: Apply a variety of fire stopping products such as sealants, boards, wraps, and collars to protect against the spread of fire and smoke in buildings.
- Penetration Sealing: Install fire-resistant materials around service penetrations (e.g., cables, pipes, ducts) to create effective barriers against fire spread.
- Joint Sealing: Apply fire-rated sealants and fillers to construction joints, wall and floor junctions, and other structural gaps.
- Compartmentation: Implement fire compartmentation by ensuring walls, floors, and ceilings are properly sealed with fire-resistant materials to limit the spread of fire.
- Compliance and Quality Assurance: Follow building regulations and fire safety standards (e.g., BS 476, EN 1366) to ensure fire-stopping systems meet required performance levels. Carry out inspections and checks to ensure installations meet fire-rating requirements.
- Documentation and Reporting: Keep accurate records of all fire-stopping activities, including details on the products used, locations treated, and any certificates of compliance. Report any fire safety risks or installation issues to the site supervisor or manager.
- Collaboration: Work alongside other trades such as electricians and plumbers to integrate fire-stopping measures with other construction activities.
- Health and Safety: Adhere to all health and safety protocols on site, using the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) and following site safety rules.
Skills and Experience Required:
- Experience: Prior experience in passive fire protection, particularly in fire-stopping installations, is essential.
- Qualifications:
- NVQ Level 2 or above in Passive Fire Protection (preferred).
- FIRAS, BM TRADA, or equivalent certification in fire protection (preferred).
- Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of fire-stopping techniques and materials.
- Familiarity with relevant fire safety regulations and construction standards.
- Technical Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and building plans.
- Proficiency with fire-stopping tools and materials, including sealants, fire batts, and collars.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous installation to ensure compliance with fire safety standards.
- Physical Fitness: Able to perform manual work, including working in confined spaces and at heights.
