James Cowie and Co Ltd, established in 1962, is a specialist steel fabricator for the construction, infrastructure, telecommunications, renewables, and mechanical engineering sectors manufacturing structural steelwork and metalwork. We are seeking a detail-oriented Steel & Metalwork Estimator to join our dynamic team in Hamilton; this would be suited to an estimator currently working in the industry but could also suit if you have experience in fabrication or site experience and looking for a career change. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for steel and metalwork projects, ensuring competitive pricing while maintaining quality standards. The ideal applicant will possess strong analytical skills, a keen eye for detail, and experience in cost control within the steel and metalwork industry.
Responsibilities
- Analyse project drawings, specifications, and other documentation to prepare precise cost estimates for steel and metalwork components.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and suppliers to gather relevant data and ensure accurate pricing.
- Develop detailed labour, material, and equipment cost breakdowns for each project.
- Monitor market trends and supplier pricing to ensure estimates remain competitive and reflective of current market conditions.
- Identify potential cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or safety standards.
- Assist in the preparation of bids and tenders, ensuring all estimates are comprehensive and submitted on time.
- Maintain organised records of all estimates, revisions, and related documentation for future reference.
- Support project teams throughout the project lifecycle by providing ongoing cost analysis and updates, as necessary.

Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Steel & Metalwork Estimator or similar role within the construction or manufacturing sectors.
- Strong understanding of steel fabrication processes, materials, and industry standards.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word).
- Knowledge of cost control principles and techniques to optimise project budgets effectively.
- Exceptional attention to detail with a high level of accuracy in all calculations.
- Effective communication skills to liaise confidently with clients, suppliers, and internal teams.
