An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Parks team. We are looking for a person who is keen to work in our parks and be part of a vibrant team that covers all aspects of grounds and parks maintenance. You will work in a small team who cover award winning Green Flag parks in Crawley, including Tilgate, Goffs and Worth Parks, as well as Broadfield. If you are keen for a new challenge this is the place to be.
The work is often high paced and demanding and you will have a varied role, where different tasks will be asked of you throughout the working day. You will need to have experience in ground and parks maintenance and have a keen interest in working with plants and all other aspects of horticulture and conservation site maintenance. The parks are very popular and there is a requirement to be adaptable and flexible as plans often change and you will be required to assist at times both the events and zoo teams.
Key tasks and duties:

grass cutting, strimming and edging
-
hoeing and weeding
-
weed spraying if qualified (PA 1 and 6)
-
hedge trimming
-
watering, planting shrubs and seasonal displays
-
cleaning, maintaining and simple repairs to signs and street furniture
-
cleaning and checking where necessary, toilets and wash hand basins
-
snow clearing and gritting
-
supporting with events set-ups, and general assisting
-
securing bollards, buildings and gates
-
chipping pruning’s if trained
-
maintaining waterways
-
cleaning graffiti
-
reporting any issues that you can’t deal with yourself
You will need to be able to operate/use all related vehicles, mechanical equipment and tools such as:
-
transit sized vehicles or equivalent
-
ride on mowers (if qualified)
-
Avant (if qualified)
-
mechanical blowers
-
strimmers
-
hedge cutters
-
pedestrian mowers
-
chippers
-
weed rippers
-
hand tools (including forks, rakes, hoes, brooms, shovels, spades and saws)
You will be expected to look after and maintain all equipment and machinery, tools and vehicles.
We are looking for someone with personal commitment to the role. It is essential to have good customer care skills, listen to customers and always look to address any issues yourself. If you cannot resolve it, you would report to the Parks team leader. You will be expected to always be calm, professional and respectful to park users, your work colleagues, parks partners and the parks management team.
There will be a requirement to have a good understanding of the council’s safety policies and procedures and these include the following:

working in a safe manner according to site risk assessments

understanding the council’s policies and procedures on health and safety

sharing the council’s safeguarding commitment by promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk as outlined in the council’s safeguarding policy

reporting accidents and incidents and any dangerous occurrences

only using machinery and tools you have been trained in
-
wearing the correct uniform, safety clothes and personal protective equipment (PPE)
-
protecting your skin from the sun
-
when working on your own, making sure that your line manager knows where you are at all times
This post is for 37 hours per week, Tuesday to Saturday. Hours to be agreed with the Parks Maintenance and Conservation Manager to meet service requirement.
Summer hours will be from 7am until 3pm with one working day finish at 2.30pm. Winter hours will be from 7.30am until 3.30pm with one working day finish at 3pm. You will be required to work one day per week in the summer from 10.30am until 6.30pm and in the winter from 7.30am until 4.30pm.
Extra hours may be required outside of basic working hours to reflect demand, including Bank Holidays, weekends and occasionally some evening work, for which a 14% enhancement will be paid.
A full and current manual UK driving licence will be a requirement of the role.
