Caval are recruiting on behalf of a well-established engineering and fabrication client based in Irlam who are looking to add an experienced CAD Design Engineer to their growing team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled design professional with a strong background in heavy fabrication, structural steelwork, and bridge design to join a busy and forward-thinking engineering business delivering complex projects across the UK.
The Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for producing detailed engineering drawings and designs for large-scale fabrication and bridge-related projects. You will work closely with project managers, fabrication teams, and clients to ensure designs are accurate, practical, and delivered to specification.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone with strong technical ability and real-world fabrication knowledge.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings for heavy fabrication and bridge structures
- Prepare fabrication drawings, GA drawings, assembly drawings, and material schedules
- Interpret engineering specifications, structural calculations, and client requirements
- Liaise with workshop and production teams to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable
- Support project delivery from concept through to manufacture and installation
- Modify and update drawings as required throughout project lifecycles
- Ensure all drawings comply with industry standards and quality procedures
- Assist with site measurements and technical support when required
- Work collaboratively with engineers, estimators, and project managers
Requirements
- Previous experience as a CAD Design Engineer within heavy fabrication or structural steelwork
- Strong experience designing bridge structures or bridge-related components
- Proficient using AutoCAD, Tekla, SolidWorks, or similar CAD software
- Ability to read and interpret engineering and fabrication drawings
- Understanding of structural steel fabrication and manufacturing processes
- Knowledge of industry standards and engineering best practices
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Full UK Driving Licence preferred
Desirable Experience
- Experience working on highways, rail, or infrastructure projects
- Familiarity with CE marking and fabrication standards
- Experience producing drawings for large-scale steel assemblies
- Knowledge of welding and fabrication methods
