Job Description
We are seeking a compassionate and resilient Mental Health Support Assistant to work within a school setting in Newport, supporting pupils aged 9–16 years with mental health needs, trauma backgrounds, and associated behavioural challenges.
This role is ideal for someone with a strong understanding of mental health, emotional regulation, and trauma-informed practice, who is committed to supporting vulnerable young people to engage positively with education and develop coping strategies.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small-group mental health and emotional wellbeing support
- Support pupils with trauma-related behaviours and emotional regulation difficulties
- Implement and follow individual support plans and behaviour strategies
- Use de-escalation techniques to manage challenging behaviour safely and effectively
- Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils
- Encourage resilience, self-esteem, and positive coping strategies
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SEN staff, pastoral teams, and external professionals
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to monitoring progress and wellbeing
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience working with children or young people, particularly those with mental health needs, trauma, or behavioural challenges
- Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
- Calm, patient, and empathetic approach
- Ability to remain resilient in challenging situations
- Enhanced DBS on the update service - or willing to apply for one
- A Right to Work in the UK
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Desirable (but not essential)
- Experience in a school, SEMH setting, alternative provision, or care environment
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice, SEMH, or safeguarding
- Relevant qualifications in mental health, psychology, youth work, education, or care
